J Dilla’s Mother, Pete Rock To Release Posthumous Dilla Album

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Before renowned Hip Hop producer J Dilla passed away in 2006 due to complications from the Lupus, he had already recorded a number of unreleased tracks, including music he produced during his stay in the hospital. More than three years after his death, Dilla's mother Maureen Yancey, who is better known as “Ma Dukes,” along with Dilla's idol and respected Hip Hop producer Pete Rock are planning to release a posthumous project of Dilla’s unreleased beats and samples, called Jay Stay Paid [J$P], late this spring. Executive produced by Ma Dukes, J$P will feature music pulled off of Dilla's old floppy disks and DATs, as well as later tracks laid down during Dilla’s time spent in the hospital. Ms. Yancey assures that the project was not rushed, nor was it done haphazardly. “This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career and what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep,” she explains. “This is like the missing links to Dilla's legacy.” The format of the album plays like a radio show with Pete Rock acting as a radio DJ. While largely instrumental, J$P also features guest vocals from artists Black Thought of The Roots, MF DOOM, and M.O.P. All are artists that Dilla worked with or admired. “Dude was amazing,” said Pete Rock, who shared that he and Dilla held a mutual respect and high level of regard for one another. “He just kinda came out of nowhere and the more you heard his beats the better they got. He may not be with us, but it’s all good we’re going to keep his music alive and well.”

Jay Stay Paid will be released on June 2 via Nature Sounds.

HIP-HOP LEGEND GURU TO RELEASE GURU 8.0 LOST & FOUND

HIP-HOP LEGEND GURU TO RELEASE GURU 8.0 LOST & FOUND THE NEW ALBUM SET TO UPGRADE TODAY’S HIP-HOP DROPS MARCH 24, 2009

January 14, 2009 (New York, NY) – On April 21, 2009, legendary emcee Guru (GangStarr) and producer Solar, the teaming that has already produced three hit albums (Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures, Jazzmatazz Vol. 4 and The Timebomb / Back To The Future), will release their latest collaboration Guru 8.0 Lost & Found (7 Grand Records). Guru 8.0 is the upgrade Hip-Hop fans have been waiting for.

Guru, most recently known for his groundbreaking Jazzmatazz album series where he collaborated with the likes of Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock, Isaac Hayes, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Macy Gray and David Sanborn, has returned to his GangStarr roots with the release of Guru 8.0 Lost & Found. Unlike Jazzmatazz, Guru 8.0 Lost & Found is Hip-Hop in its purest form and features little collaboration beyond 7 Grand artists, K. Born, Highpower and Doo Wop, the UK soul singer Omar, and the first ever appearance of producer Solar as an emcee.

Three examples of the diversity, both musically and lyrically, found on Guru 8.0 Lost & Found are tracks “Best Of My Years,” “Fast Lane” and “Divine Rule.” “Best Of My Years” has a classic Hip-Hop feel to it, “Fast Lane” is a southern Hip-Hop inspired track that shows off Solar’s ability to take an established subgenre of Hip-Hop and rework it to make it his own. Stretching things out even further is “Divine Rule,” which is a throwback to Hip-Hop’s early beginnings when emcees used to rhyme over disco breaks.

For Guru and Solar their advancement of Hip-Hop started in 2004 when they launched 7 Grand Records and continued in 2005 when they released Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures, which sold over 100,000 copies and was one of the top ten independent releases for that year. The long awaited Jazzmatazz Vol. 4: The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future (2007) received critical acclaim both for it inspiring lyrics and phenomenal production, topping at 150,000 units worldwide.

Common Provides Youth With Online Book Club

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Common Ground Foundation is dedicated to the empowerment and development of urban youth in the United States.

The Common Ground Foundation was created by Hip Hop artist, actor and children’s author Lonnie Rashid Lynn, known as “Common”. Common’s social-conscience message serves as inspiration for equality, opportunity and hope among youth in undeserved communities. The Foundation is committed to empowering youth in urban neighborhoods and providing life skills needed to achieve their dreams.

Common time and time again done his part to help the youth through writing and community service. In 2005 for instance, he wrote and released three books for elementary age children that received warm praise from parents and teachers alike. Now, with a new online venture, Common is hoping to inspire teens through the art of storytelling with The Corner book club.

Launching yesterday on
commongroundfoundation.comThe Corner book club is described as an interactive medium to engage high school kids in reading, specifically with their book-of-the-month selections.

With education being a foundation in his own household, Common explained the decision behind starting The Corner book club. “My mom was a teacher, and growing up she always stressed the importance of education. So when I look back it's not a surprise for me to use words as a tool to make change, and to inspire children for the future,” he said in a press statement.

Along with material to enlighten the minds of teenagers, The Corner will also provide interviews of book authors, including March’s book-of-the-month author Emmanuel Jal, who wrote War Child.

A noted reader himself, Common is adamant about the fact that reading and education go hand in hand. “You’ll never stop growing; you shouldn’t. And it’s alright to be a teen growing, but not in height. I’m talking about wisdom, experiences, and self-knowledge.”
