Bouncing Cats Trailer

Uganda has been called one of the worst places on earth to be a child. In the South, children face the threat of poverty and disease. In the North, these threats are enflamed by a brutal, mindless war inflicted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (L.R.A.) that has divided families, displaced millions, and led to the abduction and mutilation of tens of thousands of children resulting in the deterioration of identity and culture.

Bouncing Cats is the inspiring story of one man’s attempt to create a better life for the children of Uganda using the unlikely tool of hip-hop with a focus on b-boy culture and breakdance. In 2006, Abraham “Abramz” Tekya, a Ugandan b-boy and A.I.D.S. orphan created Breakdance Project Uganda (B.P.U.). The dream was to establish a free workshop that would empower, rehabilitate and heal the community by teaching youth about b-boy culture. Based in Kampala, Uganda, B.P.U. has recently expanded to include permanent classes in Gulu, Northern Uganda. Abramz teaches classes three times a week to more than 300 kids from all parts of the country. Many of the children are homeless, victims of war and poverty, and few can afford proper schooling yet they walk from miles away to attend the B.P.U. classes. As Abramz says, “This is where many people’s pride is. It’s a skill that no one can take away from us.”

Crazy Legs, one of the founding members of the seminal Rock Steady Crew visited Uganda after receiving an invitation from Abramz to teach b-boy classes. What he discovered upon his arrival was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Traveling throughout Uganda, from the southern slums to the war-torn North, Crazy Legs encountered a passion for hip-hop and desire to learn amongst the most squalid conditions.

Bouncing Cats follows Abramz, Crazy Legs, and Breakdance Project Uganda on a journey to use hip-hop culture for positive social change. The film features narration by Common and interviews with Mos Def, Will-I-Am, and K’Naan.

80 Blocks From Tiffany's - Official DVD Trailer, November 2010

Another must have film coming up, that will bring you back to the gang culture of this era. Why I post all these documentaries about gang culture in the 70's? this is hip hop in the making, in actual reality, gang culture, these hard times and many other factors, is what gave birth to hip hop culture in the 70's, so pay attention to these docs and learn some history. I remember when this film was talked about but i myself never got a chance to watch it while it was on VHS but like "the Warriors" which was also a reality of the gang culture in New York City, its a must watch film. Can You Digggggg It?

Five Day Weekend and Traffic Entertainment are proud to announce, 80 Blocks From Tiffany's, director Gary Weis' 1979 documentary about the South Bronx and its gang culture, The previously unavailable film will be released for the first time in 25 years, on November 2010. This masterpiece documents South Bronx gang culture in the 1970s focusing on interviews with members from the Savage Skulls & Savage Nomads the whole way through the movie giving the viewer first hand insights into the extraordinary lives they all lived enhanced with some excellent interviews with local police, business people and the community affected by the gangs behavior.. It will also include a 40 page book comprised of the original "Savage Skulls" article, an essay by David Hollander, and artwork by Julian Allen. All of this is, of course, to accompany both full and widescreen versions of the film that started it all.

Despite its role as an important and unflinching portrait of a profoundly interesting time in New York's cultural history, 80 Blocks was, for many years, impossible to find, only briefly available as an educational VHS release in 1985. In the years since its initial release, the documentary has gained an overwhelming cult status. With little to no news coverage over the decades since its release dedicated fans continued to buzz about the film. That buzz grewexponentially via the internet, which provided fans a common platform to fondly look back not only the at documentary itself, but the era that it captured so vividly.

Sister Fa - A female Hip Hop Artist from Senegal by Anna Pesavento

Sister Fa, born in April of 1982 in Dakar, Senegal, took her first steps in rap-music in 2000 when she recorded her first demo-tape and got to know the Senegalese rap community. In 2003, she joined the label FN`F –Fight n´ Forget – where she participated on several compilations.

At the end of 2003, she was invited for the second time to the Senegalese Hip-Hop Awards, which had particularly been dedicated to fight against AIDS that year. From that brought the release of the compilation, Tous Rappons le Sida, which Sister Fa contributed.

In August 2005, her long awaited first solo-album, which she had produced herself with great love and enthusiasm, was finally released in Senegal. In December of the same year, her dedicated and hard work paid off when Sister Fa won the best newcomer of the year award at the fifth Senegalese Hip-Hop-Awards.

In March 2006, Sister Fa moved to Berlin, Germany, to live with her husband, an Austrian ethnologist and documentary filmmaker.

With all her strength, Sister Fa fights against the practice of female genital mutilation. She traveled with her band through Senegal for three weeks in January of 2008 on a self-organized tour entitled "Education sans Mutilation," with the hopes of sensitizing the population of her homeland to the cruelty of the practice.

We had the pleasure to interview Sister Fa about her experiences as a female hip-hop artist, the differences of her life in Senegal and Berlin, and about her recent social engagements. She talks about how the internet has improved the international communication and how it enables her, as a musician, to cooperate with other artists around the world.

The video also shows footage of Sister Fa's concert on August 21 at the PopDeurope Festival in Berlin.
