If you have facebook/twitter/tumblr you probably already know about this, if not then google joseph kony.

i haven't been this heated over the internet since the stop internet piracy act.
in the last 2 days a video called stop kony 2012 has blown up over the internet. its a video about stopping a man called joseph kony from uganda who abducts kids, forcing the girls to be sex slaves and the boys to be armed soldiers for his army called the LRA.

keep in mind that this has been going on for fucking YEARS. The LRA started in 1987 i believe. i learned about this back in high school. around 2007/8 when i was about 16 or 17.

---------------------------

In the past 2 days this subject has finally exploded. after 20+ years people just now are finding out about this. im fucking pissed at the internet and all the fucking dumb fucks on fagbook, twitter and tumblr that have become overnight social activists just because they saw a fucking 30 minute video. all im seeing is people sharing the video ACTING like its making a difference like they think that raising awareness will somehow stop all of this.
the way i see these websites have been split into 2 groups of people,
the ones that know that only physical action will stop this, and the ones sitting behind a computer screen playing hero by posting updates sayng OMG #stopkony :,( ill stop it by posting this video and getting a lot of likes (:

My Facebook Post: People Need to shut up about Joseph Kony, you sharing a video on facebook isnt going to do shit, if you actually want to do something pack your shit and go to Uganda

Yes, what the LRA is doing is horrible. but as for me im not going to do anything about this, the world is full of this type of stuff. horrible things go on everyday in this world, its something that will NEVER go away.

I want to see what the people from RHHF have to say about this.

I saw the video but didn't load it coz i don't wanna use up my internet, but i was planning on watching it later

but it pisses me the fuck off how people on facebook post shit just to get likes, and if you say something in your status about how stupid people are for just posting shit to get likes, you get a lot of backlash for it. so many fucking fags on facebook

anyway i'm still gonna watch this video and then i'll have something to say about that :D

Never heard of the man or about his movement against this one man that's supposed to be behind all the horror (wut wut), but I find it incredibly odd that you're pissed off at people who wanna spread awareness of that shit and you're pretty much working against that movement. If half the world is furious against someone, eventually some big state is gonna gather a little quick glory by going in there and sorting shit out. If Uganda can't do it, some superhero nation will.
Civil people moving to Uganda to face this man, how the fuck would that help? It helps more to go whine about it on the internet. Revolution is the flavour of the month, people just wanna find out what to protest against.

If they'll get him arrested, what would keep the next man from stepping in to his position? I'm presuming he's head of a large organization.... Seems to me that all they've done is put a personal face on the horror in Uganda.

awareness doesnt stop anything. if awareness fixed everything. the world would be at peace. im mad because 95% of the people sharing the video are acting like a simple click of a "share" link will solve this problem

EYAR, it's just like any movement or organization. you share it with 100 people and maybe 15 get actively involved in it, but that ratio remains relatively constant. that means when 1000 people fine out, 150 get active. the video itself clearly details how you can actually help beyond spreading the info. what makes you think even the most hipster person spreading this video just for likes isn't making at least one person who is actually going to do something aware of this situation for the first time? i didn't know about it until i saw it on facebook, and i'm the type that won't spam it all over my facebook status, but rather i'd like to donate some money to the cause and maybe contact the policy makers the video is talking about. that is why i say that building awareness through simple social networking is, in fact, important. it may not get everyone active, but it will still dramatically increase the number of people who do wish to get active.

“Suggesting that the answer is more military action is just wrong,” said Javie Ssozi, an influential Ugandan blogger.

“Have they thought of the consequences? Making Kony ‘famous’ could make him stronger. Arguing for more US troops could make him scared, and make him abduct more children, or go on the offensive.”

Rosebell Kagumire, a Ugandan journalist specialising in peace and conflict reporting, said: “This paints a picture of Uganda six or seven years ago, that is totally not how it is today. It’s highly irresponsible”.

Amazingly, i agree with the chief hipster here. For anyone who actually wants to end such suffering, a Pession is simply not good enough. Solidarity cannot be restricted to asking Team America to sort it, or for Amnesty to set up a letter writing campaign. The likes of Kadyrov are not going to be impressed by whinging and they are never going to be menaced by imperial powers mindful of his direct links to the Kremlin. Kony doesn’t give a shit if online activists put his mugshot up and Museveni will be laughing all the way to the bank.

These people might start worrying if grassroots activists working independently of them start getting serious contacts and backup. Trade unions, community activists, journalistic rebels and political groups can actually use such support. So that, if you're really bothered, is where you should start.

And everything above if its true, which i highly doubt. This whole campaign sounds like a ponzi scheme. In 2005-2006 this would be truly relevant, but now, i don't know. And what's up with this imperialist attitude on those people that made that video? Really? Boots on the ground will resolve the problem? really? i think its the other way around. Boots on the ground will drive people to the enemy, as history showed us.

And goodness gracious, the chief hipster is right. Look at these kids, they make me puke. And most of them act like this is a trend, a hip new thing. This is not a trend, playing with peoples lives is not a trend.

from what I've heard and read it seems like the company behind the video is very shady and untrustworthy, so you don't really know where your money's going and it's probably not really gonna help any kids.

my point is something should be done about Kony, though i do agree, the tactics discussed in this video are not the right choices. and IC supports the Ugandan government who has a nice list of human rights violations to its name as well. check this article from Liberation News (yes, a Marxist-Leninist paper that is written by the Party for Socialism and Liberation. i know. shoot me for reading this stuff, but they hit the nail on the head here):

Yup, that's the thing. I understand the power of social media and networking, the Arab Spring is an example, but this campaign is something else.
