I think he's tryn to kill the taboo of the word. i don't agree with people when they say that nigga should be thought of as a horrible word. When you give a word that much power it can really hurt peoples feelings. That gives power to racists, when really we should just realize that racists are just ignorant people that shouldn't be given any attention to. In my opinion, i think nigger should be looked at like motherfucker, shit, damn, etc.

Quote (J-Breakz) I think he's tryn to kill the taboo of the word. yeah, that's what he said he was doing. Quote (J-Breakz) When you give a word that much power it can really hurt peoples feelings. i agree. that's what i was talking about in my "What Is The Point of Pejoratives?" thread (formerly known as "What is the Point of Bad Words?" until I_Guy changed it ). i must say that i agree with you 100% Quote (J-Breakz) In my opinion, i think nigger should be looked at like motherfucker, shit, damn, etc. i'd go further. i think all of those words should be loosened of their power as well, to the point that they are more on the level of gosh-darn.

i cant agree with this shit at all. i dont give it power but i think this was one of nas's many marketing ploys. having the word nigger plastered all over the place will create buzz and sell more records. he did it with hip hop is dead and it worked so tried it again. the fact that he put this word out there like this to make a buck really makes me kinda sick personally. ive been called a nigger with some hatred on the other end and that shit aint something you can change with one song, not even in the slightest bit.

The whole album is pretty much based around the word and its meaning in the past and today. How the media influences the world, famous black people and activists. the story of negro. told by nas through song (with small references to 50 for being a pussy)

I couldn't find anymore pics but i remember seeing dude all over the place rocking that shirt at interviews and parties the month prior to his release. he was a walking billboard that i feel he only did to generate more revenue and ignoring those that were offended. which is coo i aint hating, dudes making his money but i feel it is in bad taste to profit off of hatred and the pain and suffering of others. I see it like this. i dont hate on the word because i get slightly offended. if im walkin with my grandma who is very aware and conscious at 87 and if she heard it, used in any form the only thing that i can imagine her thinking of is the shit she's seen and been called for the first 50yrs of her life. it makes no sense that a word that is used to chip away at an entire group of people is now used so carelessly. if i cant walk up on anyone calling them (apologies for negative language) fag, chink, spick, etc. than i feel i have the right to be offended when the word nigger/nigga is used.

The AFL comes and shuts you down and even worse arrests you .

That's why I feel the only solution is to soften the meaning of all those words. When you create taboo words and give them more and more power by avoiding them in discussion, you create a sort of pandora's box and you make it more and more powerful and fill it higher and higher so that the evil people who do use it have power over us all. These words give racism grounding. I'm not saying you would wipe racism out entirely by taking the power away from these words, but words changing their meanings are a reflection of how history and times change. The more open use of the term, although highly controversial, is a symbol of the fact that racism is becoming less and less of a problem. Many people believe racism is a natural problem that just exists and always will exist. That is a complete lie. Now sure, mild racial tensions that were completely insignificant may come "naturally", but racism in the way we look at it started when we began to discover the Americas. Racism was created as a device to hide the underlying issue -- classism. Unequal segregation, one of the methods used to perpetuate racism, was what Willie Lynch based his model on. So in essence, institutionalized racism is a larger scale Willie Lynch model created during the 14th or 15th century. It's original purpose was to keep races fighting amongst each other so that they couldn't get together and begin a revolution. Occurrences like Bacon's Rebellion had the local governments in the New World scared of massive uprisings. This fear led to, among other things, racism. On of the signs of the times that was indicative that racism was emerging was the use of the term "negro", a derivative of the Latin word of the same spelling which simply means "black", as a pejorative. Eventually the word evolved into the word "nigger", and in South Africa and other parts of the world the word "Kaffir" arose, at the height of racism around the world. Prior to the emergence of racism being used on a massive scale as a model (or "institutionalized racism"), "the moors", as they were called, ruled many lands, including the European country of Italy, which housed the descendants of the former Roman Empire. So to conclude, maybe these words have no actual effect on society, but standing up against their mainstreaming, in my opinion, is foolish because as they get used more and more, as long as we continue to recognize the history behind them, they lose their power and are indicative that racism is losing it's grip. As for Nas, if I were to make an album that was trying to bring the meaning of the swastika back to it's original meaning -- a symbol of peace -- I know for damn sure, at risk of being shot and killed, I would name my album with the symbol itself and wear a shirt with a swastika everywhere at risk of being shot. It wouldn't be a publicity stunt though, it would be an attempt to help further raise awareness. That, I believe, was Nas' prerogative.

I don't think that's the right way to think about it. Why are you letting a word have so much history and hatred behind it? It's only giving racists power. And trust me, our society views fag, chink, spic, etc. to not even be close to the taboo of nigger, which I disagree with. Oh, and also if you're so offended by the word why do you have it in ur sig? "which makes him a fake a$$ b!tch a$$ ni66a" Quote (Adam) You know whats weird. I've never in my life actually seen a black person get called a nigger out of hatred. Actually I've never seen a black person get called a nigger period. My cuzn's half black and he lives in the midwest which can get pretty racist. He was dating a white girl and her mother didn't want them dating cuz he was black. I remember walking with him on the street and there would be a escalade full of white boys that yelled out nigger when they drove by us. If there was no hate or taboo behind the word nigger then those white kids probably wouldn't have said anything cuz they wouldn't be able to think of such a hateful word.

i dont know dude, i cant think of my peoples history without remembering that word. i will never ever be able to have a smile and say that word knowing that i have blood relatives who were killed while being called that. In order for that word to be accepted by me i would have to forget history. since that will never happen i will never be ok with people using it so care-free. I also dont mean to pry into yalls personal lives but if you are not black I feel its hard to pass judgment on something you've never personally experienced and cannot experience on that level. kind of ironic that i was called nigger bout 10 times today on xbox live whoopin cats on CoD.
