How much attention do you pay to lyrics and song meanings?

I usually listen to a song for the beat or if it just sounds cool but once I listen to it a few times then I listen to the lyrics closely and look at the song in kind of adeeper way. I guess a song has to capture my attention first and then I'll look deeper into its meaning.

the beat has to somewhat catch my attention off the bat (except for on the rare occasion when the artist starts by rapping acappella then the beat comes in) but once the lyrics come in they have to connect and make sense with what they are saying AND how they are saying it, so i'd say very important, and because of my poetic background maybe more important than they are to most, but still the other factors come in to play as well.

my new theme song

The way I see it is that the beat sets off the mood for the song, if its a hard hitting beat or slow melodic type of sound watever it gets the mood going. then your lyrics should capture the mood of the beat into words and convey a image of wat your rapping about

same with me, i think its the case with most people, at first they're mostly just listening to the beat.
