another point to make on technologys impact leaves me with this question. Im assuming everyone here has an extensive hip hop library am i right? Well how much of that hip hop have you actually purchased including the "old classics"?

ok dude thats still a pretty big chunk of music you ARE NOT PAYING FOR! something that was possible back in the day but definitely not to the quality and ease you are doing now.

ya but you said its easier to get your stuff out there which it is but there is such an over abundance of stuff out there that its damn near impossible to be heard unless you have a gimmick or have a friend (the same could be said for back in the day for knowing people). Also if someone is listening to you and you are underground, theres a huge possibility that he didnt buy your shit, hes listening free from torrent or blogspot. the struggle is still very much there just in a different form. in a lot of ways i actually think its harder for someone to get a break

Quote (Adam) The internet, youtube, hip hop sites, myspace, facebook, twitter. Music is being heard and spread faster than ever before. The "demo tape" is obsolete, the struggle of a new jack is non existent, and music in general is evolving due to this. Remember when krs 1 got spat on by marley marl, and he came back with criminal minded and shitted on all of juice crew. Has that happened in the recent years of hip hop? Has the struggle and need to make yourself heard been as critical as it was back in the day? In my opinion I think the listener including all of us here are being way to lenient and dealing with "ok" songs and "ok" albums. Maybe its because we hear so much now a days and we have access to an unlimited supply of new music that we naturally grow to be "ok" with "ok" music. I don't know if its a bad thing or not, but to be honest I haven't heard shit that has had a big effect and was as groundbreaking as hip hop when it was beginning. Its music in general not only hip hop.
