what underground artists would you recommend to someone who is unsatisfied with the hip hop music of today but doesn't really know any alternative underground artists to get into? eg this guy, i saw his video and was wondering, what artists could i put this guy onto because he is clearly unsatisfied with the hip hop music of today but i'm not sure if he knows any underground artists out there today

mf grimm, killah priest, blue sky black death, cunninlynguists, bronze nazereth and jedi mind tricks all have had consistently great albums. the list would be bigger if he had more time but thats for starters and off the top of the dome

It depends on the person's tastes. If they're into jazz I'd recommend ATCQ, Gangstarr, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, InI, Cunninlynguists' "A Piece of Strange" album, etc. If they're into softer shit, I'd say Living Legends, Atmosphere's later work, Common, Talib, Mos Def, De La Soul, etc. If they like hardcore shit, especially metal, I'd recommend Jedi Mind Tricks, RA The Rugged Man, El-P, Virtuoso, 7L and Esoteric, etc. If they like hardcore and political, I'd go with Immortal Technique, Dead Prez, Mr. Lif, etc. If they like abstract stuff I'd recommend Saul Williams, Sage Francis, Dalek, El-P, cLOUDDEAD, Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, Fat Jon, Busdriver, etc. If they like live instruments I'd recommend Heiruspecs, The Roots, Us3, Stetsasonic, ArtOfficial, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Spearhead (mostly their early work), etc.

I usually recommend them the Rhymesayers artists (mostly slug of atmosphere or eyedea (r.i.p.)) because they have a style that you can listen easier than a hardcore shit -mostly you listen them with a smile in your face- and the beats are very melodic. They usually like it and get used to listen rap. When they reach that point, i mean when they start to listen eminem by themselves :), i gave them the real shit: nas - illmatic, sabac red, immortal technique, jedi mind violent by design , mobb deep The infamous... etc.
