I think this guy is one of the most promising up and comers in the hip hop scene today. He's young, he has dope lyrics, he appeals to both mainstream and underground, but unlike a lot of others he's shown no signs of selling out and he's not some corny looking poser. The guys agl for the future of hip hop imo

Boring. Safe. Piggyback. Lackluster. Tired.

Fits right in. So no complaining here. I suppose the people who are tired of their nas and big l cds will have something new to play... by new I mean old and comfortable.

Go ahead. Google "Joey Bada$$" and get pictures of Lil B. Google "Lil B" and get pictures of Lil B. Based god already passed judgement, so it doesn't matter what we think of him.

I don't think he fits, I think he stands out. If he just wanted to 'fit in' or play it safe the most safest thing he could have done was try to imitate commercial rap or follow the trendy swag scene like lil b and riff raff. Joey's stepped outside whats trendy but still has a built a big following just off his music not gimmicks

He stands out just like the countless underground acts happening right now. He is undoubtedly playing it safe, there is already an audience for his kind of music. Swag rap is not commercial, that is just internet culture at it's finest. Sure there are instances that you can point at, but as a whole commercial rap is not Lil B or Riff Raff, or Dirt Nasty for that matter too. What is a gimmick? you think Lil B is a gimmick? what makes his artistry any less sincere then joey's? nothing. My point is that he fits into a niche that was carved out years ago. He brings nothing new to the table. Does every single thing have to be original or fresh? No, but that doesn't take away from the fact that joey is playing it safe by piggybacking off of a sound established decades ago. Not inherently a bad thing, but it does not interest me.

Lil B is not something to be taken seriously, that doesn't mean he is not a sincere artist. His diss track is a lighthearted joke, but when Joey responds in a more serious, ether-esque fashion, the joke is on him.

I am not saying joey is not good, he is obviously talented. I just don't think he deserves as much hype as he is getting. It is special that he was able to break out of the underground scene that boom bap and 90's hip hop is home too. There is without question a huge nostalgic appreciation going on right now in hip hop. People are loving this stuff right now. This is gonna sound wild, but I believe that it is people like lil b and riff raff that are the reason this kind of shift is happening.

Well maybe he's just being him and making the music he likes. I mean I don't see him trying to imitate anyone. If he's making the music he's making because he likes it then thats just being sincere. The songs Like Water and Word Is Bond songs are what won me over on him. The guys doesn't just have good lyrics but he uses them over good beats. I guess we'll see where Joey ends up and if he can put a good album out

There are a lot of people wanting to hear artists like the old school, but maybe that shows how bad hip hop is atm, if riff raff and lil b are responsible for that well what does that say about them. Underground hip hop is popular with the skater kids now right? Maybe thats where these guys have come from, idk if its because of riff raff and lil b but its good to hear emcee's with good lyrics. If riff raff and lil b are your thing fine but its not for everyone. But Joey is very promising right now, with the attention he's getting he's also helping raise the standard for rhymes too. I wonder if the rising popularity of battle rap could also be responsible for that

It's internet in general that is making this shift. People like riff raff and lil b often have references and just random lore about old school music and other legends. Look at kitty pryde rapping over doom beats. All of this is what is making this change.

I kinda see what you're saying now Adam. I mean look at this

These guys except for Method Man look unoriginal and just like some imitators to me. I mean esp with the clothes they're wearing in the video wtf. A lot of these guys are just tryna cash in on people who like old school but they're not bringing anything new to the table. This video almost looks like a parody of 90's videos. I don't think Joey Bada$$ is as bad as these guys though, at least his shit sounds good and doesn't look or sound a parody
