i dunno i just picked up a copy of John Coltrane's "Ascension" and it doesnt sound like music to me

never heard any of Ornette Colemans stuff though

you've probably heard this aspect of Coltrane:

Coltrane went through 4 or 5 distinct periods in his life of which his music sounded vastly different from anything it had previously sounded like.

this is the Coltrane they are referring to:

i jokingly get mad when people talk shit about free jazz because i like it, but i understand why people don't like that. a lot of people don't.

and fyi, here's Coltrane's last period before his untimely death in his 40's (i could only find the "Om" solos, so no Buddhist chanting in this video unfortunately :( ):
