With his debut album, The Day The Turf Stood Still, still garnering rave reviews and a KMEL Bay Area Freshman 10 award under his belt, Bay Area rapper DaVinci went on the record with an exclusive interview for Distortion 2 Static. In doing so, he fills us in on a few substantial concepts on the album, including the changes of his native Fillmore District in San Francisco and his intricate and evolving relationship with money. DaVinci also makes note that The Day The Turf Stood Still is an album intended for a serious sit down and listen. The video interview also previews snippets of his upcoming video for "Concrete Jungle Juice," set for release in the coming weeks..

To occupy those who are intrigued by the interview and need to hear more, DaVinci is also letting loose a free song for fans: "Cool Ass Whip," which features legendary San Francisco rapper San Quinn. Not intended to show up on any particular project from the rapper, "Cool Ass Whip" is summer riding anthem perfect for the sweltering temperatures that have been hitting us all. The beat is smooth and cooled out, with laid back verses from the emcees, accompanied by Matt Blaque's own chilled out hook, singing, "I'm rollin' around in my clean ass whip, takin' my time tryin' to see my chips."

After releasing North By Northwest (2005) and Dead Letter Perfect in 2007 (which have led to features on SoulStice in XXL Magazine, The Source, Urb, and The Tavis Smiley Show) SoulStice returned in 2009 with Beyond Borders, an "international concept album” featuring vocal collaborations with G.L.C., Kev Brown, Zap Mama, Oddisee and many others. SoulStice has recently debuted on the Hollywood scene through song placements in the Oscar-Nominated film "The Blind Side” starring Sandra Bullock and on NCIS LA on CBS and has become one of the few hip hop artists to actively support marriage equality with release of his controversial song "Strange Kind of Love.”

The most recent music video by SoulStice features images of both interracial and same-sex couples. As SoulStice explains, "it wasn't long ago that my wife and I couldn't have gotten married in the US. Today's ‘free love’ struggle centers around the LGBT community and same-sex marriage.” SoulStice recently took his advocacy for marriage equality a step further by joining the Los Angeles-based NOH8 Campaign, a photographic silent protest movement founded by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska and partner Jeff Parshley in response to Proposition 8 – the 2008 ban on same-sex marriage in the state of California. NOH8 has produced thousands of photos featuring supporters with duck-taped mouths – in a recent photoshoot, SoulStice has joined the "Familiar Faces” in the campaign including other notables such as Russell Simmons and Kathy Griffin.

To show his support, SoulStice has released a song called "NoH8,” with instrumentation by Mid-West producer Mighty Wyte, which was inspired by the photographic campaign. "NoH8” is available on iTunes and proceeds from the sale of the song will be donated to the campaign. According to SoulStice, "…marching in the LA Pride parade with Jeff and Adam and doing the NOH8 photoshoot was an experience my wife and son and I will never forget. By the time my son is old enough to understand the movement, I hope he has to wonder why we ever needed a NOH8 campaign in the first place.”
