Sandpeople are back on their collective grind but things are different "This Time Around."
It's been almost 3 years since the Portland, Oregon based mega-crew has released an official album (their 2009 release "Long Story Short" received critical acclaim and earned them play on MTVu with the music video for "Hate Aside"), but they have remained ridiculously active like 6th graders during a Ritalin shortage with a steady barrage of solo member and sub-group releases. Amidst the various Sandpeople-related projects, the entire crew has been working together on new material and plans for world domination. The first phase begins now, as the "10 headed dragon" launches a kickstarter campaign to help with international tour efforts.

To kick-off this campaign, Sandpeople has released the new single "This Time Around," produced by Chase Moore. Here we find Illmaculate, IAME, Goldini Bagwell, and Ethic delivering scorching verses over Chase's hard hitting drums and anthemic melody. DJ Spark kills the cuts as always, dropping bars with samples better than most emcees do over samples. "This Time Around" it truly is different; Sandpeople are hungrier than ever and the rest of you rappers look delectable.

Earlier this month, billy woods announced an April 10th release date for his forthcoming album, History Will Absolve Me. Along with that announcement came the video for "Headband," a song that won't actually appear on the album, and so, as the release date fast approaches, woods is excited to debut the album's first official single, "Body Of Work," featuring Masai Bey and Roc Marciano.

The track, produced by Willie Green, is one of the earliest that the emcee and beatsmith recorded for the album, snatched up after woods heard Green making the beat live in the studio and had to have it. "The inspiration for 'Body Of Work' comes from chain-gang spirituals," he explains. "All of the verses concern themselves with work, but also with getting older and trying to sum up one's life, for better or worse."

For the concept to work, billy knew he needed some other voices on the song but it couldn't be just anyone. "I knew I needed some older cats on it," notes woods, "Masai is as old-school as it gets and I've been a big fan of Roc since the UN days." Each rapper adds their own personal experiences and perspectives, bringing the track to life with three unique and insightful perspectives. Of his own verse, woods had this to say, "if you are familiar with the land issue in Zimbabwe and South Africa, the content of my verse might be a little clearer but really, there is a universality in there. What is the line between working and stealing, between when you think you deserve and what you have?"

This is a great socially conscious hip hop song from Dallas "Dibbz Dreek"

"True Lies" is a trip through the mind of Dibbz Dreek as he explains odd things that he notices day to day. The song touches on everything from the Occupy Wall Street Movement to coercion in politics and religion. The jazz sample is taken from “Norman Connors - Land of Passion” and the quote at the beginning comes from none other than Huey Freeman from the Boondocks cartoon series. Guest vocals were performed by Savant aka Stanstro which gave the song that much needed sultry emotion and provided a bridge between the two 24 bar verses.
