mayor street letting the xgames come to philly to rape and exploit skateboardign for millions of dollars
that's pretty much why i quit
it was just starting to become popular and i was into skateboarding because i loved it, but one of the main things i loved was the rebellion it represented. i loved the fact that my lifestyle was considered illegal. idk. i was a kid at the time. when do kids ever think rationally?
oh, and i'd heard that about Love. back in like 1999 people i knew were already talking about how Love became a total bust.
i've skated Pier 19 (i think it's Pier 19. there are so many goddamn piers in SF that i have no clue though) when i visited my aunt, i skated the other famous skate spot in SF too, i forgot the name, my middle school was actually a pretty popular skate spot because of a BEAUTIFUL 10 stair with a handrail (had knobs, but we always welded them off
) and Eric Koston and Paul Rodriguez actually made it famous. i tried to board slide it and probably could have, but i almost got injured bad and this was just before i stopped skating, so i didn't, but i totally had it. if i find some picks i'll post. i've skated most of the dope spots in downtown, but even back then they were so bust it was ridiculous. i can't imagine how not worth it that shit is now. what really discouraged me though was the fact that i fought so damn hard and worked my city so hard to get a skate park put in (something i caught a lot of flack for because it went against the whole "rebellion" aspect of skating. we were into rebellion so deeply that, for example, if we listened to a popular artist, we weren't allowed to listen to the radio hits. we had to listen to the b-sides. lol!) and when it finally did, after 3 years of fighting (i got to cut the ribbon and everything!), some old fuck that has never skated in his life and is just an architect that doesn't know the first thing about the physics of skateboarding took the plans i made myself, pissed on them (symbolically speaking), and created a completely fucked set of plans and made the shittiest skate park in the US. that was basically the main thing that discouraged me and showed me that skating was going completely corporate. but yeah, as i said, i'll post up some pics of my middle school, preferably with Eric Koston skating the 10 stair. i also have pics of me ollieing it somewhere. i sent them into Prevention File magazine, but unfortunately they didn't know shit so they posted the ones with me skating the 4 stair instead. if i find those maybe i will post too.
