ok, i decided i wanted to have a philosophical debate without trying to make it directly related to religion. we were discussing this in my philosophy class the other day. the discussion was revolving around the concept of the mind-body relationship and different concepts that are related to it. we discussed dualism and monism and all the sub genres within them and when we got to functionalism my professor decided to play a clip from Star Trek where a scientist wanted to disassemble Data and make more like him but they ruled that Data had a conscious choice to decide if he wanted to be disassembled...... anyways, the episode was great, until the judge said something to the effect of "we've been dancing around one question all day: does Data have a soul?" my professor was upset they had to drag that in there and i asked him "what is your definition of a soul?" his definition had to do with soul being in reference to the theological definition of the mind. i don't know if i agree. though i would say most of the time when you discuss this idea of the "soul" it has theological reference, i don't feel that "soul" and "mind" have any relation. idk how i would go about defining soul though. what are your thoughts on this?

LOL- this is gonna get religious SO fast...... oh boy........

I'll try to steer clear of religion......

I believe we all have a soul which is what makes EVERYONE of us completely different... sure we all have some of the same interests and what not but I think if evolution(damn, i tried to avoid it) were true we would all end up extremely similar with the same outlooks on life...strictly survival and love for our own like how other species are... I dont think animals other than humans have souls(souls like ours anyway)...We're so vastly different ....tell me when you look into your mothers or lovers eyes on those days you're getting along, you don't see and feel her soul...there's something that gives us life other than the flesh were in....cuz the second the body dies(if you've seen someone die) you know something beyond our imagination just left that body

can you expand on that? you said what category it fits into, but you didn't say what it is.

i swear, these definitions keep leading me in circles. check this. it is the main dictionary definition for soul:

"the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans, regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body, and commonly held to be separable in existence from the body; the spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part."

WTF?!?!?!?! what is the "spiritual" part of a human? ok, definition time again:

"the principle of conscious life; the vital principle in humans, animating the body or mediating between body and soul."

oh how nice, a circular definition! so the soul is defined as the spirit and the spirit is defined as the soul? WTF?!?!?!??!!?! this is driving me NUTS! wacko

you'd think Scientist would be able to explain this by now considering how much we've evolved as humans - LOL- at least religious people have an answer happy

The soul is an abstract concept the we (the laymen) place on (as of yet) unexplainable psychological factories that occur deep within our subconscious. It is connected to the spirit. I don't really believe in these things, I see them as a mental abstract device for labeling certain aspects of the internal psyche.

We all know that each of our end is near; the question is do we accept the end of our living existence, or do we accept our existence as dead men...
