Jacob seems to be like God, he has the power to change things or to heal things but he doesn't always excercise his power, instead he leaves it up to the persons free will, he cures people or brings people back to life but when he does he demands a sacrifice kinda to replace it like God in the bible.
the man in black likes to tempt people with the things they want, kinda like the devil did to jesus during the 40 days, he's also lied to people tempting them to get his own way, he was a prisoner of Jacob but was allowed to do certain things the same way the devil is a prisoner in hell yet God lets the devil do certain things. the man in black was talking about the people on that boat the same way the devil was talking to God about Job
