Keith "Cowboy" Wiggins, a rapper with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five has been credited with the coining of the term hip hop in 1978 while teasing a friend who had just joined the US Army, by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of marching soldiers. Cowboy later worked the "hip hop" cadence into a part of his stage performance. this how i know it and thats how old heads told me too

yes we might never really find out which one it was between lov starsky, cowboy and grandmaster flash or hollywood. they probably all just followed each other but its said that cowoby used it on stage. I remember it was used alot by emcees in block parties that went up to the mic and always threw in hippidyy words like that. i think was even before rappers delight came out with i said a hip a hop. then its said africa bambaataa was the one that used the name that phrase "hip hop" to name the culture.
