another term they used alot back then when people jsut got on the mic was "bee bop" hip hop could have been called bee bop instead LOL lots of funny words were used especially with the human beat boxing which started even before the fat boys 80's when there was no music in the back ground and in the 30s was used by some in place of musical instruments, some went doot, wawp, bapadoo beebap bop LOL its like a different language.. so it goes so far back as to where they could have gotten the name hip hop in there somewhere from those terms.

Yeah, the origin of the term hip hop is pretty abstract at this point. The most commonly accepted origin is the theory that Cowboy (RIP) came up with it like Menace was saying though. What emcee was the first to use complex metaphors (hint: it was before Rakim).
