Jeru the Damaja - The Sun Rises in the East (1994)

This album was the debut of Jeru the Damaja and it was solely produced by DJ Premier.

Intro - Jeru drops some wisdom over a smooth DJ Premier beat.

D. Original - This track was pretty dope, the piano sounded a bit like it was being played by a bunch of kittens though but it only gave the track a raw sound. Jeru the Damaja drops some dope lyrics and his flow/delivery is amazing to me but it sounds like it'd be hit and miss with other people to me.

"Dirty, because of the skin I'm in
The fact I have melanin automatically makes me a felon
Even though I'm righteous, rotten's what you're yellin
But I'm not chain-snatchin, or drug-sellin
According to your books you said I would be damned like Ham
Scoundrel opposite of the king that I am"

Overall I'd give this track 4/5

Brooklyn Took It - The production was alright, a bit repetitive to me. It was really a braggadocio track, Jeru giving props to BK.

3/5

Perverted Monks in tha House (Skit) - "We be on the mic, doing lyrical Kung Fu. Anyone who dares challenge us, will get destroyed. The poisonous taoist."

Mental Stamina (Feat. Afu Ra) - The production was pretty dope but if you pay attention to that beep it can get annoying. The Dirty Scoundrel pretty much rips the track too: "Can't chill, because the Sun don't freeze", "Class with us and meet Cerberus" - Jeru the Damaja. Cerberus is the dog that guards the gates of Hades. Afu Ra did good on this track too: "Breaking down substances, combining matter
Test my hand skills and back bones splatter" - Afu Ra.

4.5/5

Da Bichez - A pretty smooth, jazzy beat by Premo and Jeru comes in and rips it with a great message :D "Poppin the coochie for Gucci, Bitches like you ain't shit to me." - Jeru the Damaja

You can't stop the prophet - The Prophet is on the lookout for Mr. Ignorance but is attacked by Anger, Animosity and Despair. He gets hit with a poison dart and wakes up in the barbershop with Mr. Ignorance's wife, Deceit. She approached him, about to cut his hair off but once she starts trying to cut it the clippers blow the fuck up because his hair ain't no ordinary hair for sure, he kills Mr. Ignorance's wife but sadly he doesn't get him in the end and he has a bunch of other women anyway.

The Production was alright, the story telling was great though and it actually had a message too.

4/5

Ain't the Devil Happy - The production is pretty dark and Jeru does alright on this one.

3/5

My Mind Spray - The production is pretty dope and Jeru shows off his vocabulary on this one.

4/5

Come Clean - The production on this one is great in a weird way, Jeru is on some battle-type-stuff on this one. "The relentless lyrics the only dope I slang" "Control the mic like fidel castro locked cuba"

"Unplug it on chumps with the gangsta babble
Leave your nines at home and bring your skills to the battle
You're rattlin' on and on and ain't sayin nothing
That's why you got snuffed when you bump heads with Dirty Rotten"

5/5

Jungle Music - Jeru's lyrics & Premo's production are both dope on this one.

5/5

Statik - This track was alright, Jeru's lyrics are fine but the production is very simple, I can still listen to it though.

3/5

----------

Overall I'd give this album 4 mics in the RHHF Source.

It could have been a lot better imo, I wouldn't consider this a classic like many other people on here but then again I've only listened to it through once.

WHAT??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! that beat is my second fav on the album and Jeru's first verse is one of the best in hip hop history!!!!:

"As devils search for the secrets to immortality
I alter my physical chemistry
Walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I exist even when no things are left
Vibrations transcend space and time
Pure at heart because I deal with the mind
That's why I compose these verses
Audible worlds my thoughts are now universes
Written on these pages is the ageless
wisdom of the sages, ignorance is contagious
So I hope you keep your focus
There's no hocus-pocus, in the end, it's just us
Devil got brother killin brother, it's insane
Goin out like Abel and Cain
Wisen up and use your brain
There'll be no limit, to the things that you can gain
In positivity, balance it with negativity
Until then, ain't the devil happy"

like i said above. and it is definitely a classic. "Wrath of the Math" is actually better to me though.

That album is a bless to the hip-hop, and its better than Illmatic (arguable Liquid Cocks beats em all).

Nooooooooooooooooo way, Ain't the Devil Happy is my fav one here and Jeru murdered it, especially with the 1st verse. Beat is ill ass fuck and RZA as a laughin devil is amazing, it was a perfect move to loop that.

Eaaaaasy now.. I don't like the Source I thought I'd just throw it in because a 5 star system is better (imo) than 0-100% (And by better, I mean it looks better.. not only the Source uses it but yeah the mic thing is a Source thing.) As for my kitten comment you seem a bit upset about I actually liked that about it, meant no offense to free jazz at all. Ain't the Devil Happy wasn't a bad track either (although I feel like I've heard a lot of it before) but like I said - I've only listened to this album once so my opinion may change later on.
