right now one problem i'm having is like Render said the pauses or breaks i sometimes have between sentences, i usually only notice them when i've listened to the song a few times, often i listen to it on my ipod and think hmm i should put this word in there, or add that etc, i usually write a verse then come back months later and edit it more and more with lines i wouldn't have even thought of using coz my mind is more fresh.

Well it's easiest if your main rhyme lands on the slap or the snare. You just have to work out the meter and from then on it's easy.
We all know that each of our end is near; the question is do we accept the end of our living existence, or do we accept our existence as dead men...

Quote (EmSeeD) what i do is i listen to the beat, think of a concept that will suit the beat or go with one of the many song concepts i've already thought about and written down listen to the beat, have notepad open in another window, start off with the first line, first i sound out the rhythm in my mind while the beat plays, like i'll go 'da. da da da, da" or whatever, then i replace the "da's" with words that rhyme lol. when i write the first line i play the first bit of the beat, then i'll pause it, i'll write down the line, play the beat from the beginning again till the next couple lines and write those. this takes a while depending on how patient you are, that's why so far i've only written one full song (and that wasn't even to a beat) and i've written a whole bunch of first verses for different songs to beats. its mostly coz i'm lazy and get distracted. i don't write it like this the whole way through though, eventually when i get the rhythm down coz i've play it so many times i automatically know the rhythm i can just write it, then play it and read the words out in my mind and edit and fit them properly to the beat. yeah i just realized i only actually do this with the first couple rhymes after that i just go on and write a bunch of lines, then stop, play the beat from the beginning and rhyme over it in my head to see if it flows right,

Writing with a beat is neccessary but dont forget about most important thing: arrangement. Some rappers are boring as fuck when they spit because they lack of any arrangement of their raps. Guru is propably the best example. And the best vocal arrangement in underground has propably Buckshot.
