When Should An Emcee Retire?

listening to some emcee's and even producers its easy to tell most of them are not as good as they used to be, most of everyone's top emcees are well into their 30's and still they're not as good as they were in their prime. But my question is do you think emcee's and producers like this would be better off retiring or do you think they should just continue to make mediocre albums, will their later mediocre albums hurt their legacy?

After thinking about this i guess its a bit easier to understand why dre hasn't released Detox and he won't release it unless he's sure its gonna be a classic, he's the kind of person who wants to keep a huge legacy and doesn't wanna go out with an average album. Even Premo is no where near as good as he was in his prime, he is still good but not as good as he used to be. Some emcee's actually get better with age like Rakim, Masta Ace, Nas but some imo get worse like KRS-One, Kool G Rap, GZA.

he's still got the rhymes but when you compare his delivery on his old albums with his delivery on his last one he sounds bored. Crooked I talked about how some people fell off, he didn't name anyone but he said its because they simply lost their love for it.

KGR's last EP "Full Klip" FUCKING SUCKED!

But I actually prefer KGR now though. His lisp is gone. He sounds better without it.

Here's what I think: if Miles Davis and Bob Dylan didn't retire and made new music up until, for Miles, the day he died and for Bob, this day (just released a new album last year) then so can hip hop legends. I wanna hear Ra spitting when he's 82 years old.

I don't know as soon as he gets too old no kids are gonna be paying attetion and only the older people like us would listen

yeah unless it was about something really deep or had some great meaning or message. coz there's no point in an old emcee trying to make kids dance or something lol.

So you're saying hip hop is just like all the people who doubted it in the past said it was? No more than a gimmick like disco? Gtfo with that bullshit man! Jazz was once a young person's form of music and so was rock and roll. What happened to them and needs to happen at some point with hip hop is THEY GREW UP! This happens to all great forms of music. Just stop that man....

It already isn't going well. Most kids these days have no clue who the fuck Rakim is and consider 50 Cent old school. That's who they respect.

i think older people can still emcee, but just in a different way i guess, which is basically what they are doing, they can't expect to still make a crowd rock when they're old ass and i seriously doubt they will even want to, i think most emcee's will retire eventually like a lot already have, but there will probably be a select few who will still go on, i can see Rakim going on for years coz he already shows he's just as good now if not better than he was before. i can also see Masta Ace go on, when i hear his older stuff some of the lines seemed suspect to me but he got a lot better.

It has nothing to do with that though. Do you think that BB King, who is 80+ years old now, is touring and making new music because he wants to sell records (he is still touring. I saw him with my dad and at that show he told us about his newest album)? No man, he's touring because he loves the music. That's why Rakim is doing it too.

Dude, BB KING JUST RELEASED A NEW ALBUM TOO. You keep going back to money. It has nothing to do with that. It's like my man Unite C. This dude says he doesn't think he will ever sell a beat no matter how much money he makes because he loves the art far too much to use it for the money. As for me, it's something I love and if it helped me live and do what I need to do then by all means I would make money off of it, but it's still not about the money and I'd be making music regardless of if it made me money or not.
