Start with this: Then this: And kill it with this: With that you kill the three normal complains about hip hop. Lack of originality, putting down woman as hoes, and dumb lyrics

most of them have heard Eminem, and he's one of the artists they often complain about.

At least the ones I kno in my city. there are two different reactions i get from people who don't like hip hop in respect to Em: "i hate hip hop, except Eminem", in which case they already know who Em is and like him, or "i hate hip hop, especially Eminem". the people i speak to that hate hip hop are most often the latter if they only know Em's newer music, and the former if they are around my age and grew up on Eminem. either way, they have almost all heard his music before, and so there is no need to introduce anyone to Eminem.

It seems to me (at least around this area) that most hipsters really hate jazz (and dislike everything that isn't in any way possible to be considered a subgenre of rock), so ATCQ, Pete Rock, Pharcyde and Gang Starr I think wouldn't convince people here, but I don't think I'd want those people to be a part of this anyway. If people like the groups above, then they're hip hop heads, whether they know it or not. Focusing on how much the groups are radio is aiming for the wrong people IMO, because it is selling them to a pop image instead of music. Run-DMC most definitely draws in people, Beastie Boys probably too, the right songs from 2pac, The Roots as well I can imagine, and a lot of the old school (especially Flash). For me I suppose it was NY icons like KRS, BDK, G Rap, Jeru, and especially Brand Nubian, that pulled my attention from the westcoast, and widened my horizon. Then I moved to the Native Tongues sound and that jazzy style, and then I started digging for other unique gems. I tried to show my stubborn father Pete Rock & CL Smooth, but nothing seems to overwrite his negative convictions. Once people already are neglecting hip hop and portraying it, it's next to impossible to convert them, even if they're hip hop heads without knowing it.

Quote (Greeny) It seems to me (at least around this area) that most hipsters really hate jazz (and dislike everything that isn't in any way possible to be considered a subgenre of rock), so ATCQ, Pete Rock, Pharcyde and Gang Starr I think wouldn't convince people here, but I don't think I'd want those people to be a part of this anyway. If people like the groups above, then they're hip hop heads, whether they know it or not. what do you mean by "hipsters"? when i think of hipsters i'm thinking of the skinny jeans and tight shirt wearing, geeked out with glasses without lenses and tape in the middle of the frame of them as a fashion statement rather than a function, 16 and 17 year old kids who listen to nothing but KiD CuDi and similar artists. if that, those are EXACTLY the people who will listen to those artists mentioned above and dig that shit, ESPECIALLY Tribe. hipsters LOVE Q-Tip. i know A LOT of people who are FAAAAAAR from hip hop heads and actually hate hip hop but they LOVE Tribe. maybe it's because you aren't from the US or the era when Tribe was around, but ATCQ was HUGE in the US back in the day. they were one of the most successful mainstream hip hop acts of all time. they've gone either gold or platinum with all of their albums, including 2 gold albums (Instinctive Travels, The Love Movement) and 3 platinum albums (Low End Theory, Midnight Marauders, Beats, Rhymes & Life). to be that successful you need to appeal to a much broader audience than simply hip hop heads. the same can be said for The Pharcyde who went platinum with Bizarre Ride, and to a lesser extent Gangstarr and Pete Rock & CL Smooth, as they both have gone gold, though never platinum. as a matter of fact, back when i was a kid i listened to nothing but Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc., and it was specifically A Tribe Called Quest, along with Common and Eric B & Rakim, that actually got me into hip hop in the first place. ok, obviously i am a hip hop head now lol, but the point is that people tend to get into Tribe and the groups you mentioned easily if they aren't already interested in hip hop. it also depends on what kind of music that person listens to though. for example, if they like metal, i am not going to get them to listen to some mellow, jazzy shit. instead i'll show them Jedi Mind Tricks, or El-P, or Antipop Consortium. some shit like that. unless they listen to "metal", aka fake ass media-manipulated, corny pop metal, in which case they are gay and probably childish and don't deserve to have their ears blessed with the wonderful goodness that is hip hop music lmao!

Skinny jean wearing media-impressionable (ye that's a word) conformists that will follow any trend to fit in. That's a hipster. Fashion is delayed here. The youth here is mostly into rock, metal, pop or techno. Those whose taste I understand is those who listen to rock and metal, most my friends listen to that, and almost all of them hate jazz. When I play it in my car, they raise their eyebrows and ask me why the fuck I listen to JAZZ, same thing with hip hop, only then they rant NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER. I don't know what it's like in the US, but here jazz is just weird, and hip hop is racist murder talk and looking buffed, tattooed up. I said hipsters hate jazz. That doesn't only go for hipsters though, I guess I meant that the majority of people in general are narrow minded when it comes to music other than the genres I mentioned. When I played Tribe, they laughed and asked what the fuck that was. Also when one of Guru's albums were playing in the lounge of this hotel, they were confused. Because, to them, jazz is this elegant thing and rap is this ghetto shit, they don't just mix. It's frustrating. Those who hate jazz, I don't understand. Those few I know who like jazz are fanatic christians, and also got prejudices about hip hop.
