liar.

Dude listens to K-Rino, nuff said.

For me its definitely the beat that is more important. I pretty much agree with everything that Adam wrote.

flow and beats over lyrics.

Then listen only to R&B LOL :D, lyrics are an integral part of hip hop, lyrics made hip hop go worldwide, its hip hop history, until hard and bone crushing lyrics came in, hip hop was considered a sub set of funk/disco music. Lyricism made hip hop special and distinct over other genres of music.

Lyrics first. Then beat, but without a good flow a good beat is useless.

uhh yeah, then please justify the popularity for M.E.T.H.O.D. MAN

this is a prime example of why beats come first, because you cannot deny the feeling this song gives you.

another example is 93 til infinity, the song has no real big lyricism or meaning, but it can best out the most poetic song in hip hop if compared.

Lyricism : The character or quality of subjectivity and sensuality of expression, especially in the arts. Adam you just fail. Those guys knew how to write a rhyme even if it didn't mean nothing, your just a sad hipster Adam Smith :D

It's a 50/50 for me.
Being the DJ and producer that i am, for me to like a song, i got to feel both.
I do have some guilty pleasures (I'm looking at you, Wiz Khalifa)

"This video contains content from Sony Music Entertainment, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds."
It makes me feel angry and annoyed.
Har har -.-

Popularity is absolutely irrelevant, and it's not at all my duty to justify anyone's popularity. But to explain why I think some musicians are popular; it's because the rich kids priorities go: Image (addicted to drugs and arrested at least twice) > Music Video (bitches) > Beat (idk, what's typical nowadays? bass cranked up, annoying high notes constantly playing switching up from time to time) > Flow (hard to detect) > Lyrics (cliches, money, sex)
The most popular songs don't need more than a crooked image and a music video with numerous half women-half plastic creatures, but if the following are important to hipsters, they need the qualities set in brackets.

It's a matter of taste. How can this even be discussed?

Lyrics are important, but no where near as important as the beat IMO. The beat and the general vibe of the song is what grabs you, how the MC or MC's flow with the beat and with eachover is what keeps you listenin. For me the lyrics are just a bonus alot of the time. Obviously with some MC's the Lyrics standout a lot, and sometimes its what sets them apart from others. Some MC's can spit on any beat and kill it, and some can also ruin a song by spitting mindless bullshit. As Eboyd said...it depends on the artist to a certain extent. I listen to a lot of Trip Hop and beats so I guess that proves that lyrics arent important for me..

exactly brother, when i personally want beats i go to Trip Hop, dubstep etc. but when it comes to Hip Hop i need some constructive rhymes and a smooth beat, you can't have one without the other, feel me?
