BEATS OR LYRICS

What matters most?

imo the beat is what makes or breaks a song, since the beat is what the person hears first and it is the first attention grabber for the listener. And then if it has good lyrics thats something that the listener him/herself will notice at his own pace/time and he will appreciate it as like a nice compliment to the song. Because you have songs that just rap about rapping where the lyrics aren't necessarily amazing, but if the beat is like a absolute classic and the guys voice and beat coexist well and compliment each other then the song is great no matter what.

Keep in my mind I'm not thinking about bad lyrics with a good beat, like just shitty trashy nonsensical lyrics. But like lyrics that aren't really important and don't really have an aim or direction, i.e. "rapping about rapping."

first the lyrics then the beat, there must be a perfect combination, also if i need beats without lyrics i would go and listen to dubstep or drum and bass and that type of crap.

shit my reply didn't get posted.. it was long too.

basically i said that it depends on the artist IMO.
bone thugz would never sound right without a beat, but i think guys like immortal technique whose music is based 90% off of their lyrical content, they could get along with some very basic-ass beats.
it depends.
BUT overall, i think... shit that's hard... idk.

Life's a bitch and I'm just along for the ride.

i think the beat is slightly more important, but of course the artist needs to be dope too and be rapping about something interesting that works with the beat, the beat of course carries the whole mood and theme of the song so the emcee needs to make his lyrics fit the beat, both important but the beat just slightly more for me

Well aesop rock has some of the most basic beats ever, and even though he is saying some of the most poetic lyrics ever; i can't listen to the songs unless the beats are okay.

I just don't think the average person hears lyrics and understands them the first listen through. I think the first time you hear a song you just notice the beat and how the guy is flowing to it. Not necessarily all the words and stuff he is saying.

i agree with bacon that it depends on the artist, but i also agree with Adam that a beat usually has to catch your attention first as it is the first thing you hear (though some songs start with the lyrics before the beat drops, so that changes things). i will say, though, what the emcee is saying is less important than how he/she is saying it, in terms of flow and delivery, and even his/her wording. for example, if i hear some dude spitting the illest lyrics i've ever heard but his flow is non existent and his delivery is mumbled and monotone, then i hear a guy with the shittiest lyrics ever but an amazing voice, flow, delivery, etc., i'm going to prefer the dude spitting the wack lyrics more so because, let's be real, it's about the music first. the message comes after.

i will also add though, it depends on the listener as well. some people listen for different things than others. some people actually like dudes who have dope lyrics but flow and delivery like Killa Wali LMAO!

Im gonna say treach is just trying to be the noble "real" head in this discussion, because he gave no reasoning.

But yeah i agree with erik, flow and beats over lyrics.

^^^ i do think lyrics are VERY important though, it's just without a decent beat and dope delivery, lyrics don't mean shit. that's why i haven't given K-Rino the attention he deserves. his lyrics, voice and delivery are AMAZING, but his beat choice and a lot of times his flow are atrocious.

i will say though, the doper the lyrics, often i can give leniency on the other aspects, K-Rino again being a prime example.

like i said, some listeners are different. of course im not going to try to listen to Lil Wayne, but i guarantee if he was getting on all of DJ Premier's best beats, while i would still consider him wack (just like i consider Lil Dap to be wack and he gets on all of Premo's best production), i would probably be able to listen and vibe out to the music just because the beats are so dope.
