I suppose theres wordplay in Recovery but the beats are pretty shitty. Suppose thats not his fault though

1. The lyrics on Recovery are a HUGE step down from anything he's ever done.

2. His delivery is fucking garbage.

3. He picked the beats, or at least didn't refuse them, no? How is he not to blame?

there are plenty of over 40's that are still doing their thing. Percee P is basically just coming up, Masta Ace is still dope if not better than he was, in terms of producers, Premo still has it, etc. and look at other musical forms. in jazz music many of the artists continue to make great music until the day they die. John Coltrane made his best album (which is considered one of jazz's greatest albums) at 40 something. Louis Armstrong had a #1 hit that beat out The Beatles at 60 something! age is no excuse for making wack music.

Masta Ace last album he did with ego g was wack. i was thinking about it being like sports players, you can't expect players from certain sports to be as good in their 40's as they were in their 20's, coz i've noticed older rappers their flow seems to get slower and less smooth and of course their voice gets weaker too so i don't expect rappers from 20 years ago to still be as good, plus the sound in hip hop keeps changing and the lyrics get better too so a lot of older rappers, their styles have become outdated. percee p was still good on his 07 album, but notice how almost all percee p's verses on his only album were verses he had written decades earlier, i've heard tracks he did in the early 90's and on some of them he uses almost the exact same verse on his 2007 album. it might be different with other genre's though

I didn't hear it so I can't speak on it, but he was already 40 or at least approaching it when he dropped Disposable Arts and A Long Hot Summer and those were his two best albums, both being arguable classics. While Rakim hasn't released anything noteworthy since entering his 40's (besides mixtapes), his flow, delivery and writing ability haven't faltered a bit. It's just his beat selection that has gotten iffy. As for Percee P, I think the reason his voice hasn't gone a bit bad like some of his peers' have is because he has never smoked a thing in his life, whether it be a cigarette, weed, etc. The carcinogens haven't effected his voice as they have in so many emcees who smoke weed on a daily basis. As for his writing, yeah, he recycled a lot of verses, but the material that he did write exclusively for Perseverance were just as dope if not better/more refined than anything he did back in the day.

I wanna add examples in favour of Erik's argument.. Posdnous and Maseo were 39 and Dave was 40, at the time of De La's last releases, and they were as dope as ever. Their style has always been different, but they keep things in perspective.
Brother J I guess has been nearing 40 when X-Clan released Mainstream Outlawz, he hasn't fell off either.
Arrested Development, Black Sheep maybe..

Well, I guess that there are just as many rappers that did fell off, if they were active until their 40's.
Guru did some truly terrible songs on his last album before he died.
