Center of Attention easily. I don't get how people prefer A Long Hot Summer to Disposable Arts let alone to CoA.

Quote (eboyd) Center of Attention easily. I don't get how people prefer A Long Hot Summer to Disposable Arts let alone to CoA. Maybe because nobody have HEARD of Center of Attention lol. Seriously, I never knew this album existed until this thread. That's an album that went under the radar.

that's why you should actually LISTEN TO IT before making your judgment. i made sure to listen to The Lost Tapes before making my decision in the last thread because i don't just want to vote for no reason. the reason InI is unknown is because this album was shelved in 1996 only to be released directly by Pete Rock in 2003. the group features Pete Rock's younger brother Grap Luva (on the mic and the boards), as well as Pete himself and Rob-O. there are others but those are the three that make up the main aspects of the group. the album features some of Pete Rock's best production, arguably better than anything found on another album where the majority of the tracks are produced by the Soul Brother #1. it also features some outside production as well as a few beats by Grap Luva, which are on par with much of Pete's best work. as far as emceeing, you get what you expect from Pete Rock, as well as two stellar feature verses from the likes of Q-Tip and Large Professor, and the emcees in the group do nothing particularly spectacular, but their laid back flow and moderately dope lyricism mesh perfectly with the instrumentation. in essence the emcees are not so much solo artists as they are more instruments that fit into the larger scheme of the song and it works perfectly.
so, if you are interested in super laid back, jazzy/soulful production with extremely technical beats that have a timeless feel, i suggest you listen to this album.
the reason the album was shelved was because it was recorded on a major label as a golden age boom bap style album in 1996 when the shiny suit era was in full effect so the label felt that it wouldn't appeal to the masses.

So you assume that I didn't listen to the playlist, why? Even after listening to the album, my vote is still A Long Hot Summer. Its a damn shame to have ur career go completely unnoticed because of a shelved album.

Both DOPE albums, both lay back albums, but Center of Attention is more consistent for me and more funky, I first listened to Center of Attention from the Top 5 Albums thread, at first I was impatient with it just skipping songs without fully playing them and I was really put off by Pete Rocks rapping, but I eventually got into it more and more, love the whole vibe of the album, if you haven't listened to it you definitely should.
Its weird coz just like Center of Attention, I'm also put off by Masta Ace's rapping, I don't like his flow or many of his rhymes either, it does have some sick songs though like Da Grind, Beautiful, Soda & Soap, Bklyn Masala, all very chill songs but the album just wasn't as consistent overall

lol i misunderstood. i thought you were saying you voted against it because you've never heard it. seriously though, i recommend downloading a copy of this album, playing it on a good stereo, and just chilling and vibing out to it, but you need to listen to the whole thing without skipping tracks. you will get a whole new perspective on it that way. also, though i wouldn't know because i don't smoke myself, i would guess that CoA is probably and excellent album to get blazed to lol.

yeah, completely bs man. luckily Rob-O released a solo project after this and Grap Luva is actually about to release his debut project (idr if it's an EP or LP, though i think it's an EP) and all of the bootleg stuff i've heard from him has been pretty dope, so i think that it's not actually that big of a deal. plus they've all been featured on various major and heavily weighted underground projects, so it's all good.

I actually downloaded it last night. I haven't gotten around to listen to it tho. I got Oxice's album and yours (once I sit down and BUY it) to go through first. But I'll definately be bumping that on my walk to the bus stop.

haha yeah, i noticed you bought the album. good looking out fam. yeah, check CoA out when you get a chance but definitely do a review of my album on the thread here. even if it's a negative review, idc. at least that way i know what people dislike as well so i can try to avoid that stuff for next time.
