i doubt i'm the only person who has noticed that there are many artists who make a debut that isn't necessarily their best (maybe it is, but it isn't always in the case i am referring to), but because it was such a strong debut, people put it on a pedestal and even act like the artist will never be able to out do it. in this thread, list an artist whose debut is considered their best, give the name of the album, say if you agree or disagree, and give a short description of why. NOTE: by all means, list Illmatic, but don't let this become a rant on that one album. if someone says Illmatic and you disagree, read it, disagree in your mind and take it in stride.
Artist: Blu
Album: Blu & Exile - "Below The Heavens"
A or D: so far i agree.
Why?: he has yet to release something, imo, as strong as this album. i can listen to it all the way through without skipping. can't say the same for J&J or The Piece Talks.
here's one that counts imo because Common found his style on Resurrection, so it was kind of his debut of the real Common:
Artist: Common
Album: Resurrection
A or D: Disagree
Why?: LWFC is, imo, the pinnacle of Common's career. it is far more advanced musically, lyrically, and most importantly, Common is more mature as a human being. the beats on this album are FAR superior, the first 9 tracks are unskippable imo, classics like "The Light," "Sixth Sense," and "Song For Assata" make this album a masterpiece, while smaller tracks like "Cold Blooded," "The Questions" and "Funky For You" help carry the load quite a bit. Resurrection is my 3rd favorite Common album in fact. i liked Finding Forever better too. the only tracks that are worthy of classic status are the first two imo.
