So you think someone dumbing down their rhyme style and subject matter is "branching out and expanding"?
LPG said it best concerning hip hop supposedly evolving: "what others call evolving, I call suicide."

How can u say hes dumbing his rhymes because hes rappin about guns and a thug persona?
So if Im an MC right and Im known for being an innovator and storyteller, I cant rap from the perspective of a thug? but a mainstream artist can?
Thats a double standard

an MC cant be a rapper because Rappers are the idustry's bitch and their just puppets

MCs keep it real and just rap from the soul whether its from a thug persona or a teacher

How many thug rappers you know that rap about anything intelligent? Keep in mind that Pac is gone now.
And as far as mainstream artists, that's why they are mainstream and not underground. Ignorance sells records. The ignorant masses want to hear that stuff. That's why those cats are mainstream because that's what sells. If you wanna rap about nonsense fell free, it will probably advance you career if you are trying to break into the mainstream industry. It wont get no love from real heads though. The fact that cats broke away from the golden age formula is why you got hip hip being in the shape its in now. Nobody is saying nothing worth hearing.
I can't believe you actually could ask me this question in all seriousness :
"How can u say hes dumbing his rhymes because hes rappin about guns and a thug persona"
Dog, are you serious? lol If someone goes from rapping about higher knowledge and intelligent things to guns and thug persona what would you call that?
A step up, or a step down?
Come on man be real.

So GURU cant rap about guns and stuff, is that the issue?
He has a rep for being the ocassional lyricist, no?
Political, Wise, Smart, Intelligent
yea he has all those qualities
But he has enough knowledge to understand wat hes doing isnt the stuff from Moment of Truth
Hes just doing something different

Say ur favorite food is pizza
and u eat pizza everyday for 20 years, dont u think it would start to get boring after a while
Then u try eating a burger and u love it! and then u start eating more food than eating one specific food

Thats how it is for Guru and EVERY MC

hip hop isnt a pizza...

but your analogy would only work for one song, hip hop has a variety of flavours

You don't get it fam. Its all good. If I listen to Guru I want him to do him. If I listen to Kane I want him to do Kane. Etcetera and so on. If I want to hear thug ish I will listen to a cat whose track record is thug joints. I want people to be themselves and do what they do. Not copy off some other lesser cat's style. If Y-Society put out a joint tomorrow called "I get the paper and smack these hoez" do you think they would keep their fans?

LMAO!!!!!!!
"I get Paper and Smack Hoes" LMAO thats funny

But can u try and at least see from the artist point of view and try to understnad why they would do a song like that

Guru knows Hes not a mainstream artist, so wat kind of audience would he be trying to reach out to if he knows for a fact he wouldnt be attracting mainstream appeal?

I have no idea what would make someone who wasn't known for doing music like that all of a sudden want to do it. My only speculation would be to make money as opposed to educating.

Well if Guru's main objective was to make money he wouldve went out of his way and tried to get signed to a major label, get a bunch of attention, drop a few pop club singles, and then do a punlicity stunt or get into a beef with a big star....But Guru kept it simple so money is definately not the case
