Erik, please share your infinite all-knowledgeable wisdom with us. What are the main things a person should try to concentrate on when trying to thicken up. I am somewhat of an ectomorph, so I am naturally slender with a fast metabolism, so it is difficult to put on weight. Advice?

^^^ exactly. Protein is the building block of muscle. Also, you need a lot of calories. You being a vegetarian makes it a bit difficult to get a lot of calories in but that is why you need to try some weight gainers. Protein shakes are ok, but they aren't quite what you want because all they provide is protein. You need protein, carbs, vegetable minerals, and most of all for weight gain, lots of calories. I suggest a product by Optimum Nutrition called "Serious Mass". The only problem is such products are expensive. If you cannot afford that, then a cheap way to do it is 1. You must eat a lot and 2. Make sure you are eating a lot of nuts and other things that will have protein and high caloric value. Peanut butter sandwiches are a great source of protein, calories and cholesterol. And don't worry, these are HDLs we are talking about. That's High Density Lipids or "good cholesterol". Next, it is equally, if not more important, to work out. If you want to bulk up you will need to get away from low weight, high repetition lifting and start doing some low rep, heavier weight workouts. I would suggest seeking out a personal trainer if you are really serious about it because especially when you start to lift heavier it is vital that you lift correctly to avoid injury, valsalva maneuver, etc. What I recommend, because most athletes, especially those trying to bulk up, do their lifting this way, is doing super sets. There are many ways to super set, but I'll tell you a basic way that happens to be my favorite. Working super sets with opposing muscle groups is a great way to focus on one part of your body a day and thoroughly work each of those muscles out in a very short period of time. The key to super sets is minimizing your rest time between sets. Instead of taking a minute rest you go straight from one workout to another. So for example, if I want to do a chest and back workout one day, I may start on the bench press but have dumb bells ready for my back workout when I'm done. So I'll do a set of 6 on the bench at about 80% of my max, or for you, whatever you feel like you can do 6 times and no more or less, then immediately switch to the dumb bells and do bent over dumb bell rows. After that you may rest for about 30 seconds and go back to the bench press. You can do this with virtually any muscle group and the beauty of it is that you only really need to spend about 20-30 minutes a day doing it and you will have sufficiently worked out. I warn that you will be thoroughly exhausted afterwards and also, if you are somewhat sedentary, I'd recommend that you ease your way into such a workout, but the benefits of working out this way are well worth it once your body is ready. I guarantee just 30 minutes a day, 4-5 days a week of this style of workout, making sure to eat lots of proteins and high-caloric foods, and you will see noticeable results in 3 months.

We eat the muscle of animals that don't eat meat.
We all know that each of our end is near; the question is do we accept the end of our living existence, or do we accept our existence as dead men...

Working out is hard and takes dedication in general. If you don't have dedication when you workout, any workout will be hard and vice versa. Super sets are no exception to this rule.
