Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. The greatest concentrations of hipsters can be found living in the Williamsburg, Wicker Park, and Mission District neighborhoods of major cosmopolitan centers such as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco respectively. Although "hipsterism" is really a state of mind,it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. Both hipster men and women sport similar androgynous hair styles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs. Such styles are often associated with the work of creative stylists at urban salons, and are usually too "edgy" for the culturally-sheltered mainstream consumer. The "effortless cool" urban bohemian look of a hipster is exemplified in Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads which cater towards the hipster demographic. Despite misconceptions based on their aesthetic tastes, hipsters tend to be well educated and often have liberal arts degrees, or degrees in maths and sciences, which also require certain creative analytical thinking abilities. My town is full of hipsters. I could list hipster bands, hipster hangouts, hipster hobbies, all in my town. My town is made up of BROS!!! and hipsters.

^^PRobably the biggest hipster I know.
I was actually in a band (Phat Minataur and the Illuminati) who had a song called "The Turkey song"
The lyrics are as followed...
"FUCK OFF, YOU FUCKING HIPSTERS!
FUCK OFF, YOU'RE A BUNCH OF HIPSTERS!
FUCK OFF, YOU GOD DAMN HIPSTERS!

YOU SAY, DROP SOME ACID!
I SAY, FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK OFF!
"FORGET ABOUT YOUR TROUBLES
DON'T WORRY ABOUT WHAT I'M NOT"
YEAH WELL FUCK THAT SHIT
YOU FUCKING HIPSTERS

FUCK OFF YOU FUCKING HIPSTERS"
the end:)
I wish it was still on our myspace so I could post it.

Hipsters are the kind of dipshits that (at least where i live) criticize you for not hearing their stupid indie bullshit.

So what if i hear Wu-Tang Clan and you hear some stupid indie motherfucker that only you and other 20 people care about?
Does that disturb you from being a dipshit?

God, i need a drink and my pen and paper.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hipster_%28contemporary_subculture%29

going from this, hipster is basically the latest pop trend, created by mainstream media and then picked up by late teens. 1999 - 2003 nu-metal/rebellion trend, 2004 - 2008 emo trend, 2009 - 2010 hipster

i believe this trend was created by the same people who made both the other two trends, the media actually go around to find whats cool and they turn it into a trend so they can market it to people

see this documentary: "The Merchants of Cool"

^^Basically he's right.
Except this time, I see no corporate involvement. Hipsters are not on MTV (or TV at all), they are not on the radio, and their clothes surely aren't at most stores.
They are really underground, but only because they do it to be cool. They want to be able to use the word "underground" and "indie" to be cool.

i think its more the attitude they have, and the fact they do it just to look cool. i know hip hop heads can have the same attitude as well, but i've learnt not to have that attitude about hip hop coz it makes you look like a douche or a hipster lol but i was like that before

I would actually like their music if it wasn't so damned BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING
Most are just knock offs of early Oasis work, and the others are just plain copypaste of Velvet Underground.

Be original, pweeze.

Mostly indie acts. They only like the music because it is indie and low-fi. the fact of the matter though, is that most of these so-called indie bands aren't indie, because a HUGE subculture is listening to them, making it more mainstream than indie.
it's just bullshit.
