no, it isn't too hype for someone to rap over. if anything it is too minimalistic to be a standalone instru. there are very few good standalone instru's in hip hop and i think that is where the genre is lacking. but tracks like "Organ Donor," pretty much any Clutchy Hopkins, RJD2, Cut Chemist, Q-Bert, Metaform, Prefuse 73, etc., negates that. it was meant to be rapped over, maybe with more energy. the Talib/Q-Tip version, i would say, is a bit better though than this one. but srsly, "Lightworks" is my absolute favorite J Dilla beat. "The Rhyme (Jay Dee Remix)" is my second.
