word man, ive said from day i think hip hop is at its best now but then you get labled as a hipster, tbh i think its the other way round most of the people speak to who think hip hop was better in the "golden age" dont really dig too deep
so true! i mean i still don't like people like Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton, etc., mainly because they all are unoriginal in my eyes, and they aren't even better at that style than the artist they are emulating, and i like Lupe, but i'm not a huge fan, so technically how the hell could someone call me a hipster without sounding completely ignorant? so yeah, someone who calls you or i a hipster is completely ignorant and just as much of a trend follower (more of an anti-trend follower which is probably more lame than a trend follower) as the real hipsters. i know hipsters. i wouldn't call anyone here a hipster by a long shot. hipsters are fucking assholes too. they act like their music is far more important than anyone else's so they take up all the studio time and when you say "yo, i have shit to handle because i'm opening up for Percee P in a week" they say "alright, hold up" and make you wait another hour and when you finally get on to find all your fucking Pro Tools files got deleted by one of them and spend a significantly smaller amount of time trying to rush to get the tracks re-recorded before you have to be somewhere within 3-4 minutes of when you finish and they still have the nerve to say "yo, hurry up" as if the studio is owned by them and therefore they are allowed to use it all day when in fact every one of them has other studios they go to on top of this one and i've been there FAAAR longer than any of them, yet they have almost 40 tracks recorded and i have like 6, but no, their shit is FAAAR more important even though they are there every day and i can only come once in a while. and note, most of them aren't opening for artists like Percee P anytime soon. none of them are near that caliber, but they sit here freestyling in the booth, have no clue how to count bars, make up wack ass punchlines and sit here like "shit, that was ILL son!", and do nothing but spit their supposed lyrical shit whilst having no versatility as artists but it's OK because Young Vito was one of my running backs in high school, right? GTFOH David! yeah, they don't down my shit in front of me, and i don't down theirs either, though i'm always honest when they ask my opinion (which is always simply out of spite because an automatic face that shows the pain going on in my ears comes out of listening to their music every time and they only ask when they see that face). for example, they ask "what do you think of the track" and i say "it's cool" and they say "no it's not. i see that look on your face" so i respond "you guys know me well enough to know this isn't my style" and yet and still i try to listen unbiasedly, and i'll admit some of the lines/tracks they make are decent/hot, and i even give advice when i DON'T like the track but know what the track needs, but most of the time i give advice they just brush me off like i don't know shit, then they try to mock me when i count the bars on one of their tracks, coming up with 10 bars 3 times in a row, and they just say "naw, that wasn't 10 bars" laughing at me and they try to play me like i need to learn how to count bars.
maybe i have a bias, but i fucking hate hipsters. i'll be honest though, one of the guys i perform with is a real cool dude and he's a big fan of Lupe, Drake and Wayne and can definitely be classified as a hipster, but he actually spits conscious shit and can kind of get off lyrically, and has a good head on his shoulders, so i shouldn't fall for the stereotype.
