Also, I am disagreeing with ratmn, hardcore isn't gangsta rap from the east. Because it's like different in many ways.

Quote (Menace) that's true, but they constructed their lyrics and music in a different sound and manner, that's the thing in music, go to music/art class for example and they will teach you the same i am talking about music in general. One thing though, they all have the same future. If they continue doing the same, talking about it, you're going to run out of stories, and pretty much, you'll be a gimmick. IT has happen to Snoop and Dre. That's why they do wack shit, to avoid people from noticing. Added (01/Feb/11, 10:41 PM) ---------------------------------------------

If the only premise that makes you put gangsta rap and harcore rap under the same roof is violence, then you're wrong man. Added (01/Feb/11, 10:42 PM) --------------------------------------------- I win.

Quote (Greeny) If the only premise that makes you put gangsta rap and harcore rap under the same roof is violence, then you're wrong man. Same themes. Did i say ANY TIME ON THE WHOLE THREAD THAT VIOLENCE IS THE ONLY THEME WHERE THEY COLLIDE? Stop trollin', son. It doesn't work Quote (Menace) well they seem to do only whack and mediocre shit, that's why they should retire when you run out of stories and the gimmick is over, you should retire in glory. When you do G-Shit, the only way you can turn from that, is to political shit, or retrospective. They SHOULD had do that. A long time ago

Yeah, sorry, it's late, and I was only trying to construct a bad argument to see how it's tackled.

you guys keep bringing this argument up, calling the 90's west shit gangsta rap, and ratmn is calling the NY shit the same, but when i interviewed Kokane he made me aware of something. back in the early 90's when that shit came out, the artists doing it didn't call it gangsta rap, they called it "reality rap". they actually didn't like their music being called gangsta rap. much of the early shit was pseudo-political and all of it spoke of realities in the ghetto more so than glorifying violence there. there is no such thing as "gangsta rap". just as the term "rap" is a fraudulent term that never needed to be appropriated and used to describe what we were already calling "emceeing", "gangsta rap" described a form of hip hop music that was already labeled "reality rap" by the artists performing it. and of course the term itself gained a life of its own and started what basically became a big ass, wack ass movement of wanna-be gang bangers in hip hop.

Two things: 1. You said it yourself. Early 90s. Different times. I was talking about the 1993-1999 era, where it was actually accepted the term by the new generation of that time. 2. How the fuck you meet this people? Conventions and shit?

I was talking about the 1993-1999 era, where it was actually accepted the term by the new generation of that time. i'm talking about actual hip hop heads. sure, that label got accepted on the mainstream, but fuck the mainstream, lol. that term has never been accepted by real artists that started that shit. Quote (Ratmn) 2. How the fuck you meet this people? Conventions and shit? lol i met Kokane at Kurupt's album release party, which is where i also met Kam and a few others. DJ Quik was there but i didn't actually get to talk to him. i got at Kokane through his publicist before i talked to him there though. i met a bunch of artists before that on stage at Paid Dues. it also helps that i live in Los Angeles lol.
