Quote (eboyd) you guys keep bringing this argument up, calling the 90's west shit gangsta rap, and ratmn is calling the NY shit the same, but when i interviewed Kokane he made me aware of something. back in the early 90's when that shit came out, the artists doing it didn't call it gangsta rap, they called it "reality rap". they actually didn't like their music being called gangsta rap. much of the early shit was pseudo-political and all of it spoke of realities in the ghetto more so than glorifying violence there. there is no such thing as "gangsta rap". just as the term "rap" is a fraudulent term that never needed to be appropriated and used to describe what we were already calling "emceeing", "gangsta rap" described a form of hip hop music that was already labeled "reality rap" by the artists performing it. and of course the term itself gained a life of its own and started what basically became a big ass, wack ass movement of wanna-be gang bangers in hip hop. this is true, but you can't deny people like snoop dogg turned gangsta rap into a gimmick, i mean everything he does he puts the "gangsta" label on it, same is true for Ice Cube as well, Ice Cube was creative with it when he first started but then he just used it as a gimmick even in his movies, even Geto Boys with their song "damn it feels good to be a gangsta", that song sounds good but when i saw the music video i wanted to laugh, scarface dressed like a damn italian gangster lol you think he's a mafioso in real life? hell no, even his name itself "scarface" is from a damn movie not reality, he's just a dude who liked watching mob flicks, he even says he's a republican supporter now. for a lot of "gangsta rappers" i know they are reflecting reality, but i think many mainstream rappers in the 90's did use gangsta rap as a gimmick. i have no problem with it though as long as its creative and sounds good

I am talking about gangsta rap, and it just so happens to be in the west for the most part. So don't bring up hieroglyphics, and madlib on me, because I already like them. And I am hater of gagnsta rap, but only because it is so uncreative and uninspiring and just stupid all at the same time.

I think we all can agree that within every form of Hip Hop, there is a gimmick to go along with it.

idk how you can hate on gangsta rap, i understand if the rhymes are shit or if its unoriginal, but if you look at the context it comes from it really is reality rap, i don't want to even call it gangsta rap i only call the fake mainstream kind gangsta rap

no, abanks, i think i see where Meth is coming from though. even conscious hip hop has had its gimmicks here and there. for example, some of Lupe's tracks have come off a bit gimmicky. both of you, plead your cases lol. because i can see where each of you is coming from so i want to hear both of you elaborate a bit. i like where this discussion is going.

Political early stuff (P.E, X-Clan, etc.) had the "I'm Black, I'm black and i'm proud. Fuck the man " gimmick. Hardcore had that screaming delivery gimmick (for more info, Lords Of The Underground first album) Dirty South have those rolling snare sound. Abstract Hip Hop has the "OH, IT DOESNT SOUND LIEK TRIP HOP YET. LESS SNARE" gimmick. (Sage Francis. Look it up) Can't think of more right now.

k so in my opinion, his theory is whack and offensive to hip hop. stating that all genres have a gimmick and is an accepted opinion by all is bullshit. i can say that there are some gimmicks out there and some people attempt a rap career through various other gimmicks but i would fail to put them in the same category as a an actual rapper. i would never say every form of hip hop has a gimmick. immediately after typing that last statement i got to thinking what is meth's opinion on gimmicks. i personally see them as a negative but he could mean it not necessarily as that. Lastly are you referring to different types of hip hop/rap music (gangsta, mafioso, hyphy, club, etc.) or are you referring to the elements of hip hop?

No I didnt mean it as negative. i was just saying in every genre within Hip Hop, theres an MC who uses the genre as a gimmick and they come off incredible corny. Like Kid Cudi for example....His image is this..complex, misunderstood soul, but in his music he raps about his problems in such a corny way that its clearly a gimmick. M.O.P.! M.O.P. is an establish "hardcore" group, but some of their tracks try too hard to be.."hardcore"..it gets to the point where it isnt even believable anymore. Im sure u guys kno tons of artists who r like that.

i still see what your saying though is that a gimmick is a negative thing. you just gave 2 examples where the rapper/s were corny and unbelievable. What you call a gimmick others may call a style or a sub-genre is what i am guessing.

Seeing as we're talking about the West Coast lets dwell on the number of MCs who used the "reality rap" and turned it into the "gangsta rap" gimmick. I PERSONALLY think Spice-1 career isnt as successful as it should be because he tried to hop on the g-funk gangsta rap ban wagon. His early works sound like bad quality Chronic cuts. Even 2 Pac during his stint on Death Row had to use the gangsta gimmick. Its just obvious wats a gimmick and wats not.

Quote false abstract can be anything therefore it has no gimmick. If you didn't heard the info panel, you has no place in here. I got MOAR gimmicks. Hardcore hip hop also has the "I'm deep in da streets, son" gimmick. G-Funk has the synth gimmick Horrorcore has the synth/creepy piano gimmick Jerking music is a gimmick by itself Hyphy has the 808 gimmick.
