anything 15 years old will sound dated tho, i really cant think of a hip hop album that has been out for 10 years + that doesnt sound dated

"Dated" is a perception. Good music is good music.

true and not true. when an album feels like it epitomizes a certain time period and doesn't really remain relevant today (ie: outdated references, rhythms that were stereotypical of that time but are irrelevant today, etc.) it is dated.

Illmatic, to me personally, is stuck in NYC in 1994. lots of old NY slang, beats that epitomize 1994 (especially "Life's A Bitch" with it's straight up 90's R&B beat), subject matter, rhyme style, etc. everything about Illmatic made it the type of classic that typified a decade, not transcended one.
