i didn't say MAINSTREAM, i said CORPORATE. mainstream hip hop ≠ corporate rap, rap ≠ hip hop. corporate rap (= just plain old rap) is mainstream or underground. a corporate rapper is rapping for the corporations to give him/her money. if they are unsigned that just means they are so shit that they even failed at that. mainstream hip hop refers to artists that do get that time of day but are still dope. artists like Talib, Common, Andre 3000, etc., are all MAINSTREAM HIP HOP ARTISTS, specifically MAINSTREAM EMCEES. Lil Wayne, TI, etc., are CORPORATE or MAINSTREAM RAPPERS. someone who sucks but isn't mainstream is a CORPORATE RAPPER but is not a MAINSTREAM RAPPER because he isn't signed or on TV. he is a CORPORATE RAPPER and an UNDERGROUND RAPPER. you follow me?

The rappers ^^^ are almost always corperate (meaning doing it for the money, fame, women, etc.). The MCs never are (and they do it for the good of culture, for education, to better our youth, etc.). That's the major divide. And sure there are guys who fall in the middle, but then their position becomes a matter of opinion.
