Focus... - "Homage To Ali Shaheed" feat. Von Pea, Donwill & Chaundon (Download)Though Tanya Morgan members Von Pea and Donwill are currently taking the time to focus on their respective solo projects, this doesn't stop their frequent collaborations. On this occasion, they are brought together by Focus... for the latest in his series of tracks paying homage to hip-hop greats. This song, specifically, is a tribute to Ali Shaheed, the much-revered A Tribe Called Quest producer and also features a verse from Chaundon of Hall of Justus, who is fresh off the release of his latest album, No Excuses, as well as his performance with the HOJ crew at the Audible Treats 2010 CMJ Showcase. As for the origins of the track, it makes total sense that it features members of Tanya Morgan, as the group has worked with Ali Shaheed in the past. Becoming a part of the homage was simple and surprisingly quick, as Donwill explains. "Focus... does these homages, like, monthly and Von had put me on to 'em. After the RZA one dropped, I went to Twitter and said, 'Somebody tell Focus... I want in.' Within 2 re-Tweets he was following me and we had moved to Gmail." Von Pea, Donwill, and Chaundon do a commendable job pulling off the A Tribe Called Quest vibe, and their contributions have led to another solid installment in Focus...'s series. In other news, Von Pea will be appearing at the newest B.L.A.P. presented by !llmind. The night is celebrating Pea's Gotta Have It, Von's latest release, and will also feature producer Aeon and other special guests. The Left - "Frozen" Ft. Kool G Rap (Download)"Frozen," featuring Kool G Rap, is the latest song off of Gas Mask, the debut album from Detroit hip-hop trio The Left, comprised of producer Apollo Brown, rapper Journalist103, and DJ Soko. An ominous introduction of horns and a chanting vocal sample setup the hard-hitting lyrics of "Frozen." Ironically eloquent, the first verse of the track is a metaphor comparing the addictive nature of dope to The Left's music: "From the time you stick the disc in/ It's the same feeling that a heroin addict gets when he sticks the syringe in/ I put you in a deep nod, back and forth constant/ Once I get in your system there's no way you can stop it... I make you spend that last for that work in that plastic." It's evident that throughout the song, The Left and Kool G Rap, together, possess a certain maturity that enables them to transform something raw and gritty into a relatable and accessible piece of music. According to DJ Soko, the main inspiration for "Frozen" derives from the "drive and hunger for dope music, and the lengths that people will go to get their hands on the newest, best music." For Apollo Brown, it was his own quests for the best music that brought him to wanting to work with Kool G Rap on the album. "I've always wanted to do a joint with Kool G. Rap," says the rising producer. "He's without a doubt one of my favorite emcees of all time. He and Journalist just fit the beat, and meshed on the song as a whole. Journalist came in the studio to cut the song and I surprised him with the vocals from Kool G. Rap and we just went from there." The Left's Gas Mask, featuring appearances from Guilty Simpson, Kool G Rap, Finale, Invincible, Marv Won, and more is available now via Mello Music Group.
