"Mainstream music is music that has ties to corporate or commercial entities." ^^^^ I agree 100%. And dude, sales have no bearing on what makes you mainstream and what doesn't, however, it reflects the fact that the artists on the underground have no corporate backing or marketing schemes. Selling 10,000 records, on a corporate standard, ain't shit. DOOM, one of the underground's top selling artists, under sold Soulja Boy, the lowest selling artist on that list, by 17.5 times the amount!

Mainstream culture/media/etc. = popular culture/media/etc. In a capitalist society, because of the structure, that is dictated by corporate interests. That is just how it works. As for the "he's been on both" thing, were they actual mainstream radio/television? Was it during prime time? I can get played on college radio or even Power 106 or it's NY counterpart any day, but if that's only the Wake Up Show, chances are I'm still underground. Same with indie TV stations and Cartoon Network. Since CN isn't an outlet known for music it doesn't count.

1. You have to also remember that England is far more into indie culture than any other country, case in point, Jimi Hendrix. He's pretty much an underground rock icon in the US. He was a one hit wonder here and the one hit he had was a Bob Dylan cover song. DOOM has NEVER played on any mainstream media outlets in the US except Cartoon Network which really doesn't count. It would have to be MTV, BET, VH1 or one of the many well-known pop rap stations (during prime-time, not Sunday at midnight) like Power 106, Heat (106's NY counterpart), KIIS FM, etc. If you want to argue that he plays on our college radio stations then I can argue Myka 9 and Guilty Simpson are mainstream as well. Shit, I can argue Saul Williams is mainstream. Afterall his song "List of Demands" was on a Nike commercial. Achozen is mainstream too. One of their songs was in the movie Blade. Dude, you can find underground songs here and there in all sorts of media, but that doesn't make it mainstream.

Quote (8Diagrams) Exactly. calm down quoting other people cos your opinions get shot out the water E, im not saying college radio im saying mainstream radio i never said college radio. and ok im not even into rock but jimi hendrix is one of the largest music icons in the world to say hes underground just blows my mind, its like saying bob marley is underground cos hes never had a hit single either. but why are you always going back to the media to guide you on whos popular, doom is popular, he might not be on tv but that doesnt change the fact people like him, alot of people

There is an actual mainstream culture that makes up the majority of people that pay attention to the entertainment industry and dictate which music is "mainstream." Hendrix was NEVER mainstream (in the US. He was in the UK), neither was Bob Marley. The amount of people who actually liked them at the time that they were around was far smaller than you seem to think. They were cult legends and after their deaths they became immortalized and people began to take notice. Marley was actually a bit more popular before he died but Hendrix was definitely a cult following. Same with John Coltrane. My dad had never even heard of Coltrane until I told him who he was and he's considered the greatest saxophonist of all time.

Yes, Bob Marley was a mainstream legend in Jamaica. There's no denying that. He was mainstream music in Jamaica at the time. In the US he wasn't quite as big but he was still huge, much bigger than Hendrix. Marley is a bad example though because of that and that is why I didn't mention him but ill did. On top of that, Hendrix was American getting no love in America but plenty in the UK. Marley was huge in his home country of Jamaica but, again, not in the US.
