Is underground simply hip hop that hardly gets heard or played or is it an actual sound? Can any idiot say someone who wants to be the next Soulja Boy but hardly gets airtime be considered underground?

"Underground music refers to a variety of music subgenres that usually develop a subcultural cult following despite their lack of mainstream appeal, visibility, or commercial promotion."

No, underground hip hop is simply hip hop that hasn't gotten light. Everyone from Typical Cats to some Soulja Boy clone who hasn't made it yet is underground. There are different styles of underground within the category itself though.

I'll get at him about that. If he does I'm going to have to disagree. That is a general rule though. I mean that is the point of "real" hip hop though. It doesn't discriminate between underground and mainstream because both have wack artists and dope ones, it's just 1. the underground has more dope artists than wack and the mainstream has more wack than dope as a general rule and 2. the dope artists on the mainstream are generally legendary but the wack ones are generally well known while the underground artists who are dope are relatively notorious/infamous and the wack ones go completely undetected.

the underground has a distinct sound from that of the mainstream in all music genres is the same because in the underground is more freedom in the underground you have the freedom to experiment while in the mainstream you got a clause in the contract that pretty much blocks all the artistic creativity some time ago such clauses didn't exist in record label contracts they invented them because they can capitalize more on the artist in that way but yeah the term underground is synonymous whit the famous term "indie" or independent
