"ask the teenagers and ask the kids, what their definition of classic is,
timeless, so age don't count in the booth when your flows say submerged in the fountain of youth"

didn't have much of a chorus though, stops it from being a classic.

So Kanye's verse was less than classic. Premo's beat was classic and so were all the other verses and Kanye's didn't ruin the song. The chorus was fine. If you like classic NY hip hop that hook was priceless. You can't possibly be into the golden age if you dislike that hook. That was the epitome of a Premo hook.

meh it was okay but not a classic, classic is great, that hook and beat was okay. there was nothing wrong with kanye's verse infact it was better than nas's verse. nas' verse on there was average heres a quote:

"oh you wear jewellery yeah that's nice, now let me see you do the same thing twice, three times fo times plus a couple of mo times" - average for someone like nas.

plus that premo one isn't even the proper song its actually just a remix, the original one was done by Rick Rueben and the song was supposed to be celebrating some Nike aniversery which is why they make references to nike shoes in the song. its also why kanye says the beats slow till you listen to my pace, coz the beat by rick rueben was slow and weird.

(rick rueben version) they never made a video for this version but this is the original version for which they're verses were written.

you know iv just realized something, almost every rapper's first album is considered their best or a classic.

Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
Snoop Dogg- Doggystyle
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
Nas - Illmatic
DPG - Dogg Food
Eric B and Rakim - Paid In Full
Wu-Tang - 36 Chambers

Im sure there are probably many more examples of this. although there is one artist i can think of where this isn't the case GZA and Liquid Swords. although then again gza's first album came out before wu tang were formed and wasn't really a major release like liquid swords same can be said about eminiem's infinite

Umm... What about 2pac? His "classic" album was "All Eyez On Me" and people occasionally give arguments for "Me Against The World," his 3rd and 5th albums. Biggie's last album was hailed his best too. It is true that people, especially real hip hop heads, have a debut obsession, speaking of which, Blu is going to be another example of this, mark my word, but it isn't set in stone. Btw, Nas' verse on "Classic" was pretty monstrous to me. Kanye's was kind of weak. Those lines you quoted were supported by other lines that you cut off that help them make better sense. Even as they were though they were dope to me. To me that track successfully brought nostalgia of back in the day which was the point. And yes I know about the original Rick Rubin track but that one not only isn't known at all, it didn't have Rakim on it. Oh yeah and that Premo beat is one of his best! You crazy?!?!
