What began this thread:

Religious folks need to give up.

We all know that each of our end is near; the question is do we accept the end of our living existence, or do we accept our existence as dead men...

because i do not believe in myths or anything else that cannot be empirically proven and science, which i believe in but also realize has not more merit than religion, and science theorizes that many of the statements made in the bible are false. therefore, i do not look to the bible as historical reference, but rather as a collection of metaphorical stories to help guide people morally. they may be truthful. i'll never know. i just believe they are metaphorical rather than truthful. they may be interpreted literally, but i personally do not interpret them in such a way.

man i got homework.....ill respond tomorrow

who's to say that? how do we know science is the absolute truth? sure, i believe it is, but i do not put 100% certainty on that or anything else for that matter.

It's not the absolute truth. But it has the devices (logic, reason, sensibility, rationalism, evidence, skepticism, hierarchy of certainty, brutal peer review, technology, etc.) used to set it closer to truth more so than anything else. That's why I go for it.

see, here's the problem. it is backed by evidence, but not empirical evidence. who is to say that empirical evidence is the true type of evidence though?

Because that is the only way to measure what is closest to true within our natural earth given abilities up to this point. At this point it is the furthest we can go reasonably.

Can I ask you why you don't believe in the BIble?

For the same reasons as eboyd, plus more (which are probably his reasons too), in addition to aspects of nihilism.

alright, before i go....can i ask you atheists something?

lets say someone put out an idea that there is a deity that transcends the laws of nature, immeasurable, etc.

would you approach in finding out the truth behind this person's claim by scientific/emperical evidence? i think not.

now lets say this person died.

another person came who never knew person #1.....he claimed the exact same thing

several more people came who all lived throughout a span of several *centuries*

they said and did real things. things they did were recorded down, along side dates, places, and rulers of the time....

these people also prophecised about a man who would be this deity in flesh, with several events that were to come

this man came, existed on earth, fulfilled the prophecies of the prophets before him

all things were mentioned and recorded in several books as testimony of this deity and all surrounding him to the people who are to live after them

--------->>>would you believe?

listen man, i dont care what you say, i just want you to contemplate on what i mentioned and look into christianity....it's completely different from all religions out there.....you must strive to know the truth, that's what i mean by being humble

The problem with that whole comment is that we don't know for sure the historical factuality of what this parallels in our lives.

I already did? I think I clarafied that with you? Where's the proof? People don't even know where Jesus' tomb is located.

no you didn't....you..IT'S CLARIFIED!!!...didn't clarify anything other than mention that the priests are homophobic.

proof? Bible. (no, it's not one book)

Jesus' tomb? Try the Church of the Holy Sepulchre
