We're putting together a list of top 5 hip hop albums from every year from 1984 all the way up until 2010. we're already doing it in the youtube group but we should use the other networks to contribute to the list too.

the way it will add up is the albums get 5 points if it gets named number 1, 4 points for being named 2, 3 points for number 3, 2 points for number 4 and 1 point for being named number 5 on peoples top 5 lists.

after the lists are drawn the top 2 albums from each year will be put against other albums in a tournament style brackets, we will have votes to see which album will come out as the greatest

i should make a list about these top albums on rateyourmusic

2006, dude, 2006.

oh, the person who made the list i saw it mentioned on got it wrong. i can see why though. it was released in January.

Quote (El_Matador)
To be honest, Edan can't write a decent rhyme for shit

"illustrate skill with the quill to build stanzas"

"I could never use the facade
Of a musician to celebrate hate and abuse women"

shit, that entire track is GODLY:

http://www.lyrics007.com/Edan%20Lyrics/Beauty%20Lyrics.html

also, check his verse on "Rock and Roll":

"The virals are the scorned into The Doors open
To bring raw dosage in the form of swarm locusts
Beatles and Birds that seem evil and absurd
Gather with The Eagles that swerve to form herds
Butterflies made of Iron ride the horizon
Giving Credence to the Revival of Poseidon
Who feeds in the Clearwater, you feel slaughter
But love crafts of abyss, the horror for tomorrow
Zombies and walking dead stalk the Talking Heads
Insects with open legs halt with awful dread
All along the web the thread remains rare
With bloodshed that led to where the little feet flare
To lost places, thoughts lost for all ages
Where slow faces sit on the wall with tall gages
That overlook the 13th Floor with long gazes
Connected to the earthly core through elevators
Check it, the Underground is made of Velvet
Where buttersoft brothers talk tough on wax but ain't sell shit
Every Kraken of rap ain't the Elvis
My Aqualung cultivates the blue oyster shellfish
I design my Blurs before swine
And form rhymes that take you to a world before time
Where living things coexisted with Crimson Kings
Who on the Moon's Dark Side painted pretty things
That illustrated lessons conceived by the mothers of invention
Who also built the Stairway To Heaven, it's a present
Only to be stolen by a Thief, the Judas Preist
Who unleashes devil magic
My mental fabric too thick for Lenny Kravitz
Who imitates Jimi Hendrix in every facet
Semi-Automatic Rap Heavy Metal Jackets
Kill with mathematics to build on Black Sabbath"

and this album contains one of my favorite verses from Percee P as well. seriously, gtfoh with that "his lyrics were wack" shit lol. and, of course, the beats were fucking fire.

Quote (El_Matador)
I didn't know it was released in 2005. Pervert used to be my theme song

yes, it was.

Quote (El_Matador)
I've never heard them

:o

"Change" has this track on it:

'nuff said.

"Be" was Common's first truly commercially successful album and, while it is mediocre in terms of the rest of his catalog, it still made for a dope album in 2005 and a lot of people consider it very highly, even a borderline classic (though i would disagree).

"Minstrel Show" is probably the greatest album 9th Wonder ever produced and there was a HUGE controversy surrounding it. it is considered Little Brother's best album.

"Late Registration" isn't something that i personally look to as one of my favs but a lot of people like it and it is seen as Kanye's second best (which is pretty good in my eyes as i see College Dropout as a classic).

"The Further Adventures of Lord Quas" is one i haven't heard but it has been recommended to me quite a few times.

"You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having" is another one i haven't heard in full but many people recommend it as one of Atmosphere's best albums and it contains this track:

"DANGERDOOM" is not as good as some of MF DOOM's other projects but it is still definitely dope and worth a mention, especially considering that it was produced by Danger Mouse, the producer from Gnarls Barkley and The Grey Album.

"Felt 2" was decent. it had this track on it:

"A Healthy Distrust" was Sage Francis' best album:

Quote (El_Matador)
that shit sucks

i've never heard it. i just know a lot of ppl liked it.

Quote (El_Matador)
I don't think it was a good album, I was very disappointed with it, VERY VERY disappointed. Not only me tho'.

i know a lot of ppl that liked it tho and i liked the few tracks i've heard off of it.

Quote (El_Matador)
GTFOOH with that shit

:D

Quote (El_Matador)
Sleep - Christopher

oh shit! i've heard Say Goodbye before, i just didn't know what it was! that shit is FUCKING SICK! i'll have to check that album asap!

Quote (El_Matador)
lol garbage is garbage. What I'm saying is that we have to turn a blind eye on underground rappers. They don't have the same hunger and the same fire as rappers used to have in '90s but it does not mean they can't make some dope music.
It's just not the same anymore. Feel me?

on the same token, dope shit is dope shit, regardless of if it's underground or mainstream. just that the dope music is not on the mainstream anymore doesn't make it any less dope. if 50 classic albums came out that were super underground in one year but all the mainstream albums sucked, versus another year where 3 decent underground albums and 3 classic mainstream albums dropped, the one with 50 classics is the better year, no question.

and besides, 2002 has less dope mainstream albums than 2005 anyways. "Be" was Grammy nominated for Christ's sake! and i think "Late Registration" won at least one Grammy. and even The Minstrel Show got airplay.

1. GZA - Legend of the Liquid Sword (I love that album)
2. Nas - The Lost Tapes (I know it's a cumpilation album but it's too dope)
3. Looptroop Rockers - The Struggle Continues (Looptroop's best album, Promoe was too dope on it + great beats from DJ Embee)
4. Scarface - Fix
5. Nas - God's Son

btw 2005 is the worst year in hip-hop. I've analyzed this year... and all I got is top 2 lol

Quote (eboyd)
in fact i think 2002 is worse!

check my top 5, it wasn't a bad year. You just have to STOP comparing 2000's to '90s. Face it, nikkas talk about bringing back the '90s but '90s will never come back, no matter what. So, nowadays, if you can hear any type of "good music", just enjoy it.

Tracks:

GZA

Looptroop

even George Bush and Osama Bin Laden are looking for love LMAO!

Slidin' through all the blood like a crip walk.
Yeah, a lame ass metaphor,
but say it better or shut the fuck up,
cus like my man said: It's all about who kicks the lamest shit,
and gets away with it HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Damn that album is so sick

Scarface

Just listen to it and imagine that album in '90s... that would be a classic material, no doubt. Sleep has a RIDICULOUS flow.
He charges $200 per verse :D

I'm listening to the tracks you posted. I've heard some tracks off of the Atmosphere's album. I remeber the track "Don't even fucking question that" and one more track about tatoo that came to life.

dude, read the lyrics i posted! Edan is, imo, one of the most gifted producers who puts production first when he gets on the mic (as in ppl like MF DOOM, Jay Electronica, Lord Finesse, etc., don't count). the only ones that i feel are superior emcees are RZA, Q-Tip, Large Professor, and Pete Rock. there are probably others but none really come to mind off the top of my head.
